Greenville Prepares for New Elementary School
Greenville, S.C. – Greenville County Schools (GCS) recently revealed plans for student assignments related to a new elementary school, Reedy Laurel Elementary School, which is expected to open its doors in August 2025. This new school is being built to accommodate the growing population in the area due to recent residential developments.
According to GCS officials, around 900 students, out of the district’s total of 78,000, will be directly affected by these changes. Of these, approximately 600 students are set to attend Reedy Laurel Elementary School, which will initially serve grades K5 through 2nd grade, gradually adding one additional grade each year until it serves K5 through 5th grade by the 2028-2029 academic year.
The district also shared that approximately 300 students at other schools will experience assignment changes. This is part of a broader strategy to ensure schools operate at appropriate capacity, improve transportation, and reduce the distance between students’ homes and schools. Additionally, officials aim to eliminate 18 attendance islands, which are geographic areas not connected to a main school’s attendance zones.
Families impacted by these assignments have already begun receiving personalized notifications from the school district. GCS plans to hold a series of public meetings to address any questions and gather community feedback. The schedule for these meetings includes:
- September 16 at Mauldin High School Auditorium, starting at 5:30 p.m. Focus: Oakview Elementary, Woodland Elementary, Mauldin Elementary (to Oakview), Mitchell Road Elementary.
- September 18 at Roper Mountain Science Center, starting at 5:30 p.m. Focus: Augusta Circle Elementary, Bethel Elementary, Blythe Academy, and several others.
- September 19 at MT Anderson Support Center, starting at 5:30 p.m. Focus: Grove Elementary, multiple middle and high schools, and other district schools.
Parents and community members are encouraged to attend these meetings to voice their opinions and ask questions about the assignment changes.
