Greenville Secures $199 Million Investment for New Lithium-ion Battery Gigafactory

Greenville Welcomes Major Investment in Lithium-ion Battery Production

Exciting news is unfolding in Greenville,! A significant federal financial boost is on the way for the city as EnerSys, a global leader in stored energy solutions, has been chosen to enter into award negotiations for a staggering $199 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This funding will play a crucial role in the establishment of a new lithium-ion cell production facility, known affectionately as a gigafactory.

A Gigafactory in the Making

This remarkable development is part of a larger initiative framed under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which allocated an impressive $62 billion toward Battery Materials Processing and Manufacturing Grants. The goal? To reinforce and expand the U.S. battery materials processing industry, ensuring that domestic capabilities grow stronger in an increasingly energy-dependent world.

In total, EnerSys is planning to invest about $615 million to construct and get this massive facility up and running within the next four years. Drawing upon various funding sources, which include not only federal grants but also state and local incentives valued at around $200 million, the company is eager to hit the ground running. EnerSys also has plans to dedicate an additional $50 million specifically for a production line serving the U.S. Department of Defense.

Promises of Jobs and Production

So, what does this mean for the residents of Greenville? For starters, this new venture is expected to create up to 500 high-quality jobs in the area. The planned facility will span an impressive 500,000 square feet and will focus on manufacturing various form factors of lithium-ion cells. This production will cater not just to commercial and industrial needs, but will also meet stringent requirements established by the defense sector.

EnerSys President and CEO, David M. Shaffer, expressed his enthusiasm about the funding in a recent statement. “We are pleased to be selected for DOE funding to support this important domestic manufacturing investment,” he said. Shaffer highlighted that the new factory will help produce a variety of products, from fast-charge storage systems to advanced power systems designed for communications networks.

Construction Plans & Future Outlook

The company has firm plans to break ground in 2025, with the goal of initiating commercial production by 2028. The factory will ramp up to an initial production capacity of five gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, enabling EnerSys to fulfill growing demands efficiently.

Indeed, this is a step toward creating a closed-loop circular value chain within the lithium-ion battery industry, allowing for more sustainable practices and better resource management in the U.S.

In addition to building the gigafactory, EnerSys is also collaborating with Verkor SAS, a European leader in battery technology, to tap into their expertise in electrode manufacturing and cell production. This partnership underscores EnerSys’ commitment to innovation and quality as it makes strides in this competitive sector.

The community can expect not just growth in job opportunities but also a boost in local commerce and an enhanced reputation for Greenville as a hub of advanced manufacturing.

A Bright Future Ahead

As we look forward to 2025, the excitement is palpable. EnerSys’ expansion brings promising growth and sustainability efforts to the forefront and showcases the city’s potential to become a leader in battery manufacturing. With the collaborative effort of local and federal players, Greenville is gearing up for a transformative chapter in its industrial narrative.

All eyes are on this burgeoning gigafactory! Let’s see how it unfolds and shapes the future of energy solutions in our beloved Greenville.
