Greenville Chamber Highlights Business Protection and Child Care Needs Ahead of 2025 Legislative Session

Greenville Chambers Discusses Key Issues for 2025 Legislative Session

In the vibrant city of Greenville, the anticipation for the upcoming legislative session is heating up. On December 13, the Greenville Chamber hosted its annual legislative breakfast, bringing together over 200 business and community leaders to map out an advocacy agenda for the 2025 South Carolina Legislature session. With the legislature set to convene on January 14 and scheduled to wrap up by May 8, important issues were front and center.

Protecting Our Local Businesses

One standout concern highlighted by Matt Wills, the chamber’s vice president for government affairs, is the pressing need to protect local businesses from the burden of skyrocketing liability insurance rates. Recently, South Carolina’s joint and several liability laws have created a challenging environment for entrepreneurs, particularly for locally-owned bars and restaurants. These laws, which can hold businesses partially responsible in lawsuits, have led to a reduction in the number of insurance companies willing to offer policies in the state.

As a direct result, many businesses have seen their insurance premiums spike, creating additional financial strain at a time when they can least afford it. Wills underscored the necessity for legislative reform, advocating for changes that would help restore insurance availability and keep costs manageable. He stated, “We believe it is crucial to create an environment where our businesses can thrive without the fear of excessive liability costs.” The urgency to address this issue is palpable, as these challenges threaten the survival of many local establishments.

Child Care: A Community Concern

Another critical point of discussion was the need to improve the accessibility and affordability of child care, an issue that’s not just local but reflects a nationwide trend, particularly in rapidly growing areas like Greenville County and the Upstate. Families are struggling to find affordable childcare, which poses a barrier to workforce participation and economic stability.

Wills pointed out that child care affordability is a vital component for attracting and retaining a skilled workforce in the area. With so many families relying on these services, the chamber is advocating for solutions that ease the financial pressures on parents and expand access to quality child care options.

Broader Advocacy Agenda

In addition to these pressing issues, the chamber’s advocacy agenda touches on several other key areas, including education funding and teacher compensation. Ensuring that schools have adequate resources and that teachers are compensated fairly is essential for fostering a strong educational environment—in turn, benefiting the local economy.

Workforce sustainability and career development also stand out on the agenda. As the region continues to grow, it’s essential to develop programs and strategies that prepare the workforce of the future. Finally, investments in infrastructure remain a top priority, acknowledging that a strong infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving community.

Looking Ahead

The Greenville Chamber’s full 2025 advocacy agenda is available for anyone interested at greenvillechamber.org/policyagenda. As we gear up for the new legislative session, it’s clear that the issues discussed at the breakfast are not just hot topics but also reflect the hopes and needs of the local community. It’s an exciting time for Greenville, and as the dialogue continues, there’s a collective sense of optimism about the potential for positive change!

Stay tuned for updates as the new session unfolds, and let’s all advocate for a brighter future for our local businesses and families!
