Greenville Launches Construction of Reedy Laurel Elementary School to Alleviate Overcrowding and Enhance Education

Greenville Breaks Ground on New Elementary School

Greenville, S.C. – Greenville County Schools has officially launched the construction of a new two-story elementary school, Reedy Laurel Elementary School, designed to accommodate 750 students. The new school will be located on the site of the former J.L. Mann High School, situated along Isbell Lane near the I-85 corridor.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

The groundbreaking ceremony took place last week, just after the Greenville County School Board approved a major student reassignment plan. This initiative will impact more than 900 of the district’s 78,000 students, with approximately 600 students assigned to the new school and 300 students shifted to other existing schools.

Reasons Behind the Changes

District officials explained that these adjustments aim to address issues related to building capacity. The plan will result in 25 boundary changes across all levels of education within the district. This move is seen as a necessary step to better manage student populations in schools experiencing overcrowding.

Gradual Opening of the New School

Reedy Laurel Elementary School is set to open its doors in August 2024, initially serving grades K5 through second grade. Each subsequent school year, the institution will gradually incorporate additional grades, aiming to reach full operational capacity for grades K5 through fifth by the year 2028.

Principal’s Vision for the School

In a recent statement, the principal of Reedy Laurel Elementary expressed excitement not only for the new facility but also for the innovative programs that the school plans to implement. This marks a significant investment in the education and development of young students in the community.

Community Significance

The name Reedy Laurel pays tribute to the area’s natural features, with the Reedy River and Laurel Creek flowing through the vicinity. This historical significance underscores the connection between the school and its surroundings, fostering a sense of community pride.

Looking Ahead

As construction progresses, Greenville County Schools aims to keep residents informed about developments regarding the new elementary school. The district is committed to ensuring that the transition for students and families is as smooth as possible. More than just a building, the Reedy Laurel Elementary School represents a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for young learners in Greenville.
