Greenville Planning Development Committee Votes on Housing Proposals

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Monday night, the planning and development committee of Greenville County held a meeting to cast votes on two proposed housing developments. Both projects have been met with opposition from residents in the area.

Brandon Towns Project Passes Committee

The committee approved a rezoning request for the Brandon Towns project, planned to be located on Mason, Ross, and Jones Streets in the Brandon community of West Greenville. The project proposes the development of eight townhouses on a one-acre plot of land, where two mill homes are currently situated.

The president of the Brandon Mill Community Association voiced concerns about the inflating property prices and the dangerous precedent this could set for future developers to demolish existing homes for new projects.

The project will now advance to the full county council for a final voting round.

Rezoning of Vaughn Road Development Deferred

County officials recommended against rezoning for the proposed 15-single family homes off Vaughn Road. Councilman Chris Harrison, who represents the area, stated, “I find no reason to deny this, barring the vocal opposition.”

During the public hearing, 24 residents from the adjacent Shadow Moss community voiced their opposition, mainly due to concerns about increased traffic. Councilman Harrison accepted that this was a genuine issue, recommending that county traffic engineers hold a public forum to discuss the traffic concerns.

Harrison expressed interest in approving the project, disagreeing with staff’s view that the project wasn’t distinctive enough to warrant the rezoning requested. The committee opted to defer the project for now, advising the developer to apply for rezoning as a standard subdivision.
