In a heartening move for the community, _Greenville_ is stepping up its game in the health sector. The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) made headlines with its latest announcement: a generous allocation of over $3.1 million in grants aimed at improving both physical and mental health care access for underserved residents. This funding marks another chapter in GHA’s ongoing commitment to transform Greenville County into the healthiest county in America.

Highlighting Community Need

Every year since 2017, GHA has shown its dedication by establishing the Healthy Greenville Grant Initiatives, which have led to more than $34 million awarded to various programs. This year is no different, with a focus on vital services targeted at specific groups, including students and those recently released from incarceration, who often face significant barriers in accessing health care.

Words from the Chair

Speaking about this year’s grants, Lance Byars, GHA board chair, emphasized the unique and essential roles played by the eight organizations receiving funding. He stated, “Each is vital to keeping our neighbors safe and healthy.” This sentiment reflects the heart of the initiative: fostering a healthier community for everyone.

A Look at the Funded Programs

Let’s take a closer look at the eight organizations that are set to benefit from this funding:

  • Communities In Schools of South Carolina (Greenville County) – Awarded $300,000 to provide whole-child support at four elementary schools, focusing on improving mental wellness for low-income students.
  • Fostering Great Ideas – With a grant of $250,000, they will enhance their Aspire program, supporting older youth and young adults in foster care to boost their mental and economic stability.
  • Greenville Free Medical Clinic – This clinic received $975,000 to expand health care services for low-income, uninsured individuals and tackle social barriers to accessing chronic disease management and preventive care.
  • Momentum Bike Clubs – Awarded $90,000, they aim to broaden cycling clubs and activities in local middle and high schools, promoting physical activity and mental health among vulnerable youth.
  • Servants for Sight – With $300,000, they are set to enhance vision care services, offering everything from preventive appointments to critical surgeries for low-income individuals.

  • The Salvation Army – They received $500,000 to develop their new Center of Hope, which will provide shelter, health care access, and other crucial support services.
  • Urban League of the Upstate – This organization will use their $500,000 to address health issues in minorities and underserved communities with educational initiatives and screening programs.

Additional Support Through “Healthy Greenville, Too” Grants

Not only did the GHA distribute major grants, but they also offered $10,000 to several other organizations as part of their Healthy Greenville, Too initiative. This funding supports diverse efforts from the Blue Ridge Council (Boy Scouts of America) to the Fountain Inn Kid Enrichment Center. Furthermore, smaller grants of $5,000 were awarded to various community-focused organizations, ensuring a broad impact across the county.

The Heart of the Matter

All these efforts underscore the GHA’s unwavering commitment to community health. The Community Foundation of Greenville has been pivotal in administering these grants since 2019, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in achieving public health goals.

As Greenville continues to take significant strides in enhancing the health and well-being of its residents, it’s heartwarming to witness such collaborative efforts. With programs in place addressing a variety of health needs, the community is getting the support it needs to thrive.
