Greenville: Furman Athletics Breaks Ground on Timmons Arena Renovation
Dozens of Furman Paladin fans, donors, student-athletes, and university administrators came together on Saturday, April 13, to mark the beginning of renovations at Timmons Arena. The $40 million project, which was announced in February, is made possible by over 200 donors, including a significant $10 million lead gift from philanthropist and businessman Ravenel B. Curry III ’63.
As part of the renovation process, the Paladins men’s basketball program will temporarily relocate to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville, while the women’s team will primarily play their home games at North Greenville University.
Enhancing the Fan Experience
Furman University President Elizabeth Davis expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It is our goal to build a facility that will represent the type of first-class experience one would expect from Furman. A renovated Timmons Arena will not only honor and celebrate the Paladins’ storied past but will also create a tremendous homecourt advantage for our teams.
She added, “Timmons will be a jewel on campus for all of our students, faculty, and staff, and it will continue to be a place for the Upstate and Furman communities to gather for basketball, Furman Engaged, graduation, and other events.”
Elevating the Program
Women’s basketball coach Pierre Curtis shared his excitement about the renovation project, stating, “I think this puts us on par with the best mid-majors (basketball programs) in the country, as far as facilities go.”
Men’s basketball coach Bob Richey echoed similar sentiments, noting the energy and support from former players, boosters, and the community. He highlighted, “We look at this as a program moment, a Furman moment, a Greenville moment, and that brings a lot of joy with it.”
A Celebratory Occasion
The Timmons Arena renovation groundbreaking took place as part of Spring Weekend 2024, a series of events designed to engage the Furman community in the intellectual endeavors of students and faculty. The ceremony marked an important milestone for the university, showcasing a commitment to excellence in athletics and overall campus experience.
With the renovation project underway, the Furman community eagerly anticipates the transformation of Timmons Arena into a premier facility that will not only benefit the university’s basketball programs but also provide a gathering place for various events and activities.
