Greenville County Schools Adds E-Learning Days After Storm

News Summary

In response to Tropical Storm Helene, Greenville County Schools has announced three additional e-learning days to compensate for lost instructional time. Scheduled for March 14, April 18, and May 10, these self-paced learning days provide flexibility for students and families. Assignments will be distributed via Google Classroom or physical copies, with due dates set following each e-learning day. This initiative aims to meet educational requirements without extending the school year while ensuring accessibility for all students.

Greenville County Schools Announces Extra E-Learning Days After Tropical Storm Helene

In the charming city of Greenville, parents and students alike are adjusting to some new school days thanks to Tropical Storm Helene. Following the disruptions caused by the storm, Greenville County Schools has decided to implement three additional e-learning days this spring to make up for the lost instructional time.

What to Expect on E-Learning Days

The three extra e-learning days are scheduled for Friday, March 14, Friday, April 18, and Saturday, May 10. The exciting part? These days will be self-paced! This means that both students and teachers won’t have to log in at specific times, giving families the flexibility they might appreciate.

On these designated e-learning days, teachers will prepare assignments and either post them in Google Classroom or send home physical copies. Look for these assignments to be made available to students before 8 a.m. on the e-learning days, ensuring even the early birds can get a jump on their work.

When Assignments are Due

Students, make sure to jot down those due dates! Assignments from March 14 need to be submitted by March 28, work from April 18 is due by April 25, and anything assigned on May 10 should be handed in by May 16. The district has stated that attendance will be tracked based on the completion of these assignments, so it’s essential to keep on top of things!

Why the Change?

The decision to include these additional days came as a response to guidelines from the South Carolina Department of Public Education, which mandated that all school districts make up for the three days missed due to the storm. With school closures lasting for eight days because of unusual power outages caused by Hurricane Helene, the district was looking for a way to meet requirements without extending the school year.

As a solution, Greenville County Schools opted to include a Saturday e-learning day. This approach helps keep the summer break on track and allows families to plan ahead without worrying about extra school days lingering into the summertime.

A Look Back at Past E-Learning Days

This isn’t the first time the district has gone down the e-learning route. Earlier in the year, an e-learning day was declared on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, due to winter weather. On that day, all schools and offices were closed and extracurricular activities were canceled. Thankfully, Greenville County Schools is an approved e-learning district, which means they didn’t need to reschedule that school day.

Instructional materials are typically provided through Google Classroom, but the district is also mindful of students who may struggle to participate due to power outages or lack of internet access. This ensures that education remains accessible to every student, no matter their circumstances.

Looking Ahead

As the spring approaches, Greenville County students can look forward to these extra learning opportunities while maintaining a sense of normalcy in their school year. Parents are encouraged to support their children in keeping up with assignments and making the most of these e-learning experiences.

With schools embracing technology and flexible learning options, the future certainly looks bright for education in Greenville. Keep your schedules clear for those e-learning days, and let’s make the best out of this unusual situation!
