Greenville County, S.C. – Greenville County Schools has announced a significant change for this school year as they have decided to pause all in-person book fairs. This decision comes in light of new regulations set by the South Carolina State Board of Education regarding the selection of instructional materials.
The district issued a public statement explaining the reasoning behind this pause. They acknowledged the importance of book fairs in promoting literacy among students and the community while also serving as a source of fundraising for schools. However, effective August 1, 2024, the State Board has implemented SC Regulation 43-170, which introduces specific requirements for how books and educational materials are chosen for students.
Organizing book fairs involves a complex process, including the delivery and setup of many books and materials. This requires a quick turnaround, making it incredibly difficult for school staff to review all the content upon its arrival. The district emphasized that vendors could not provide the necessary content information soon enough for it to be properly vetted. As a result, Greenville County Schools felt it was necessary to pause the fairs to comply with the new regulations and protect their employees from any potential violations.
The Academics team of the district is currently working with schools and vendors to explore alternative solutions. They hope to offer different options like book clubs or online book fairs in the meantime. Officials reiterated their commitment to finding ways to promote reading and support literacy in schools and at home.
While the school district does not have a timeline for when in-person book fairs might resume, they look forward to engaging with the community around literacy initiatives once they resolve these regulatory concerns.
