Greenville County Schools Shine in Statewide Exams

Greenville, SC – The latest results from South Carolina’s statewide exams show that Greenville County Schools (GCS) have performed exceptionally well. Students from elementary and middle schools in the district have outshined their peers across the state in the SC READY English Language Arts and Math assessments.

Moreover, GCS students in middle and high schools also excelled in all areas of the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP), further solidifying their academic reputation. In spring 2024, 76% of GCS students who took the state’s Career Ready Assessment earned a credential, surpassing the state’s average of 72.2%.

Highlights from Test Scores

According to the latest assessment data from the 2023-24 school year, GCS students in grades three through eight have consistently outperformed the state. In English Language Arts:

  • 3rd grade: 61.7% from GCS vs 53.8% from SC
  • 4th grade: 64.4% from GCS vs 57.2% from SC
  • 5th grade: 63.4% from GCS vs 55.6% from SC
  • 6th grade: 57.9% from GCS vs 53.7% from SC
  • 7th grade: 55.7% from GCS vs 50.3% from SC
  • 8th grade: 55.4% from GCS vs 50.3% from SC

In Math, GCS also leads:

  • 3rd grade: 65.0% from GCS vs 54.6% from SC
  • 4th grade: 61.0% from GCS vs 51.0% from SC
  • 5th grade: 57.4% from GCS vs 45.7% from SC
  • 6th grade: 47.4% from GCS vs 38.4% from SC
  • 7th grade: 41.4% from GCS vs 33.7% from SC
  • 8th grade: 37.6% from GCS vs 30.3% from SC

EOCEP Success

For the End-of-Course Exam (EOCEP), GCS saw significant improvements:

  • Algebra 1: Passage rates jumped from 68.8% to 78.3%.
  • Biology I: Rates climbed from 62.5% to 72.4%.
  • U.S. History: GCS outperformed with 66.6% compared to the state’s 58.8%.

Career Readiness

The district is also making strides in preparing students for the workforce. The South Carolina Career Ready Assessment shows GCS students excel in essential skills:

  • 76% of GCS students received a Level 2 credential.
  • 58.1% scored a Level 3 or higher.
  • 39.7% achieved a Level 4.

Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster expressed pride in the collective efforts from students and faculty, thanking the Board of Trustees for their support. He believes these achievements show that students are not only excelling academically but are also well-prepared for future opportunities.
