Greenville, SC – Greenville County Schools (GCS) is preparing to implement significant changes to student assignment boundaries as part of its plan to open the new Reedy Laurel Elementary School located at 61 Isbell Lane. The district has proposed 24 boundary modifications that will impact elementary, middle, and high school students across the area.
The recommended changes are expected to affect approximately 900 students, with 600 students being assigned to Reedy Laurel Elementary. Various elementary schools, including Mauldin Elementary, Pelham Road Elementary, and Sara Collins Elementary, will experience reassignments as part of the update to the attendance areas that determine where students go to school.
Reedy Laurel Elementary is being constructed to address the district’s increasing student population. When it opens its doors in August 2025, the school will initially serve students in grades K5 through 2nd grade, with plans to expand by one additional grade each academic year until all six grades, K5 through 5th, are fully enrolled by 2028-29.
Students attending Reedy Laurel Elementary will advance to Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School, Beck International Academy, J.L. Mann High Academy, and Southside High, as outlined in the recommended assignment plan. This alignment is intended to create a cohesive educational experience as students transition from elementary to secondary education.
In addition to the new elementary school, GCS is aiming to eliminate 18 “attendance islands”—geographic areas disconnected from the primary attendance zones of nearby schools. This move aims to improve building capacity and minimize the transportation distance for students traveling to their assigned schools.
Students with disabilities will still be managed through individual assignments by the GCS Special Education Department to ensure they receive appropriate resources and support. The district reaffirms its commitment to catering to the needs of all students during this transition.
Families of those affected by the boundary changes will receive direct notification from GCS about any adjustments to their children’s school assignments. Inquiries regarding the changes can be directed to the district at planning@greenville.k12.sc.us prior to September 24.
GCS is soliciting public feedback on the proposed boundary changes through upcoming meetings. This input will be used to refine the plan, which will be presented to the Committee of the Whole on October 8. If endorsed, the final recommendation will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees on October 22.
As Greenville County Schools prepares for the opening of Reedy Laurel Elementary, these boundary changes aim to better manage the district’s growth and provide equitable educational opportunities for students. The district encourages community engagement to ensure that the most effective solutions are implemented.
