The sun peeked through the clouds in Greenville, South Carolina, and the weather was a perfect 73°F on October 28, 2024. It was a fantastic day for football fans and community supporters as a big event kicked off to inspire hope and rallies for a crucial cause: childhood cancer research.
In the heart of this vibrant town, players from Furman University’s football team, represented by senior linebacker #39, Evan DiMaggio, are stepping up to participate in the National Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Cancer Champion Competition. This incredible initiative aims to raise funds to support critical research efforts for childhood cancer, something that hits home for many families across the nation.
As people listened to the inspirational words from John Tripoli, Managing Director for Northwestern Mutual’s Upstate SC offices, there was a palpable sense of purpose in the air. “Evan and the other football players are making an incredible impact on and off the field,” he said enthusiastically. “It has been inspiring to watch communities, businesses, and universities rally behind these athletes’ efforts and come together for such a meaningful cause.”
The National Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has been a long-time partner of Northwestern Mutual, and the competition is a testament to their commitment in supporting families facing the struggles of childhood cancer. Student athletes from FCS schools, accompanied by the Northwestern Mutual teams, are working side by side, combining creativity and passion to drive donations effectively.
Participants are taking to heart different ways to fundraise: from reaching out to friends and family, collaborating with teammates, to tapping into alumni networks and social media platforms. They are making waves through the #LemonTopChallenge, encouraging individuals to join in on the fun. For every challenge completed, Northwestern Mutual pledges to donate $10 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, up to a generous limit of $100,000.
Want to get in on the action? It’s not only about raising money; it’s about having fun too! To participate in the #LemonTopChallenge, all you need to do is balance a lemon on your head, take a snap, and share it across your social media accounts such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram. Don’t forget to include the required tags: @alexslemonade, @northwesternmutual, #GoPaladins, and #LemonTopChallenge. Each tag must be there for your post to count. How cool is that?
The whole spirit of this initiative stems from a beautiful, yet heart-wrenching story. The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation began with a young girl named Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who, at just four years old, set up a lemonade stand to raise funds for cancer research as she battled the illness herself. After her passing at the age of 8, her incredible courage and determination led to the creation of a national movement.
Since its inception, ALSF has contributed over $200 million to funding more than 1,000 pediatric cancer research projects and providing vital support programs for families battling childhood cancer. They truly are a beacon of hope!
With a mission focused on improving the lives of children and families, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has contributed over $490 million since 1992. Their efforts aim to shape a durable impact within the communities they serve, emphasizing the importance of creating a brighter future.
As these events unfold in Greenville, it’s heartening to see our community uniting for this essential cause. Let’s come together to support our local athletes and join the fight against childhood cancer. Who knew balancing a lemon could do so much good? Time to get involved!
