With new leadership and innovative ideas, the chamber aims to foster collaboration and growth within the community.
On February 27, the vibrant city of Greenville buzzed with excitement as the Greenville Chamber held its 136th annual meeting at the Greenville Convention Center. Over 800 enthusiastic members from the Greenville County business community gathered to celebrate achievements, share insights, and look ahead to a bright future.
The annual meeting featured an engaging panel discussion focused on success and goal-setting, perfectly moderated by the chamber’s own President and CEO, Carlos Phillips. Esteemed panelists included local business leaders such as Babette Jones, Joe Erwin, and Beth Paul. Their insights reflected a mix of strategies, stories, and inspirations, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation among businesses in the area. It was a wonderful opportunity for networking and shared wisdom as community members rallied for collective growth.
In a notable transition, Traci Newkirk of Intellectual Capital Inc. was appointed as the chamber’s Board of Directors chair for 2025, stepping into the role to succeed Jessica Donan of Ernst & Young. This change brings fresh perspectives and ideas, reinforcing the chamber’s commitment to foster a supportive business environment for all members of the community.
One of the highlights of the event was the discussion surrounding the ambitious redevelopment of County Square. Spanning an impressive 37 acres, this project is poised to be a transformative billion-dollar endeavor over the next decade. Sitting just a stone’s throw away from Falls Park, Fluor Field, and the Swamp Rabbit Trail, County Square presents a unique opportunity to enhance the local urban landscape.
Previously completed projects in the area, like Camperdown and ONE, had significant price tags of $200 million and $100 million respectively, but County Square represents an unprecedented scale of redevelopment in Greenville. Greenville County Council Chairman Butch Kirven has emphasized the necessity of executing this project correctly due to its magnitude and long-lasting impact.
As ambitious as the County Square redevelopment is, it does come with its own set of challenges. With discussions focused on traffic and density, there is a keen recognition of the need for pedestrian-friendly designs that will enhance accessibility and connectivity with the surrounding area. Local representatives have suggested that a zoning change may be necessary to embrace new, innovative designs that support the urban vision for this promising project.
County Square is not just a redevelopment site; it is viewed as a potential test bed for urban development in Greenville. Community leaders have connected the redevelopment with the broader objective of improving the overall connectivity of downtown, along with access to local parks and recreational areas. The vision for County Square encompasses not only economic growth but also the opportunity to cultivate a vibrant community hub for residents and visitors alike.
As the annual meeting wrapped up, the air was filled with optimism and excitement about the future of both the Greenville Chamber and the exciting projects on the horizon. With strong leadership and community engagement, the stage is set for a flourishing era in Greenville.
