Greenville to Open Its First Inclusive Playground, Brooks' Playground, in Spring 2025

Greenville Welcomes Its First Inclusive Playground!

Exciting news for families in Greenville: a fantastic new inclusive playground is on the way, and it promises to be a game-changer for children of all abilities! Located in the beautiful Cleveland Park, this playground, aptly named **Brooks’ Playground**, will be a special destination for kids aged six months to 13 years and beyond.

What Makes It Special?

The playground will feature **accessible equipment**, meaning that every child can join in on the fun, regardless of their particular challenges. Picture swings designed for wheelchairs, sensory-friendly areas, and equipment that encourages cooperative play. It’s all about inclusivity and making sure that all children can share joyful moments together!

Approximately **85%** of this impressive 10,640-square-foot playground will be shaded, ensuring that little adventurers can play comfortably regardless of the weather. This means parents can relax a bit more, knowing their kids are safe from the direct sun while they explore, climb, swing, and slide.

A Dream Realized

The idea for the playground originated from heartfelt inspiration by Paul and Reagin Foster, whose daughter, **Brooks**, was diagnosed with a rare condition called Pontine Tegmental Cap Dysplasia. The Fosters recognized the need for a place where Brooks, her siblings, and other kids could enjoy playing together. Reagin Foster beautifully captured the essence of their mission by stating their vision was “to create a place where Brooks, her siblings, and all kids could play together in a playground that was accessible to all.”

Groundbreaking Ceremony

On October 29, a **groundbreaking ceremony** marked the official start of this community-developing project. Excitement filled the air as community members envisioned the joy this new playground will bring when it opens in spring 2025.

Community Investment

This **$3.6 million** project is being made possible through a collaborative effort between public and private entities. The city has pledged a contribution of **$2.3 million**, while local residents and businesses are stepping up to donate the remaining funds. The Fosters have already generously donated **$809,000** towards the project back in October 2023, showcasing their commitment to making this dream a reality.

Park Enhancements

In addition to the inclusive playground, Cleveland Park will see several other upgrades that everyone can enjoy. Visitors can look forward to **increased ADA parking**, new accessible pathways, a spacious green area for gatherings, two brand-new shelters for those sunny days, two **sand volleyball courts**, and even a new restroom facility! It’s clear that this project is not just about the playground but enhancing the overall park experience for the entire community.

A Thoughtful Play Space

As Greenville City Councilmember **Wil Brasington** has pointed out, inclusive playgrounds are vital in teaching children about fairness, equality, and empathy. They foster an environment where families can spend quality time together, promoting a sense of belonging and connection. Brasington noted, “**Inclusive playgrounds** are spaces where families can enjoy quality time together and enhance self-esteem while promoting sensory play for all users, setting a positive tone of inclusivity.”

Conclusion

With Brooks’ Playground on the horizon, Greenville is stepping forward in a big way to create spaces where every child can play, learn, and grow together. The anticipation is building, and the community is eager to see this wonderful project come to life. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and our spirits high as we look forward to the spring of 2025!
