Greenville’s Beloved Christmas Tradition Continues with Goodfellows Food Drive

As the holiday season approaches, the charming city of Greenville is gearing up for a century-old Christmas tradition that warms the hearts of many. The James F. Daniel Jr. American Legion Post 3 is back at it once again, preparing for its annual Goodfellows Food Drive. This wonderful initiative is all about bringing joy and cheer to those in need, and it promises to make a significant impact this year by providing an impressive 50-pound box of food to more than 700 local families.

A Commitment to Giving Back

Post 3 Adjutant Don Patterson expressed the enthusiasm surrounding the event, saying, “This is something we look forward to – it’s a good time to give back to the community and help others.” His words ring true as the organization rallies support from local residents and businesses to make it happen. Volunteers will gather at the Greenville Convention Center on December 20, where they will pack these generous boxes. The food will be ready for families to pick up the very next morning.

What’s Inside the Boxes?

Wondering what delicious goodies will be included in each box? Well, you can expect a well-rounded selection filled with essentials like beans, corn, potatoes, and apples, alongside hearty items such as chicken, flour, corn meal, sugar, and salt. These items have been thoughtfully chosen to ensure that families receive nutritious food. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like United Ministries and Greenville County Veterans Affairs, the recipients are carefully vetted to ensure the help goes where it’s most needed. “They appreciate what you’re doing, and they thank you for it,” said Patterson. “It feels good to help them.”

A Rich History of Generosity

The Goodfellows charity has a long and noble history in Greenville. It began in the early 1920s when a small group of businessmen banded together to support impoverished families during Christmas. The initiative quickly outgrew their capacity, and in 1924, the American Legion Post 3 graciously stepped up to take the reins. Ever since, this incredible organization has been working tirelessly each holiday season to provide for families in need.

More Than Just Food

This year marked a special development, as the bulk of the food is being purchased from Ingles Markets. The support of local business is vital, as Greenville Meats and Corrugated Boxes of Spartanburg have also come aboard as key partners. Volunteers come from all walks of life – including Post 3 members, local families, and youth organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Trail Life, and American Heritage Girls. This collaboration creates a festive atmosphere where “the kids come together and seem to have a really good time,” Patterson noted.

Founded in 1919, the James F. Daniel, Jr. American Legion Post 3 has a splendid legacy of community involvement. Their commitment extends beyond the holiday season, covering areas such as youth baseball and scholarship programs, making a young person’s dream a little brighter.
