No. 23 Gamecocks Score Impressive Third Straight Shutout in Garnet & Black Invitational

In a display of skilled performance on Saturday night, the No. 23 South Carolina softball team, fondly known as the Gamecocks, once again proved why they are among the best. As the city of Columbia, S.C. looked on, the team celebrated their third straight shutout, emerging victorious with a 4-0 win over Minnesota at the Garnet & Black Invitational.

Glorious Shutout Streak

The impressive streak sees the Gamecocks (21-5) maintaining their shutout record for three consecutive days. By not giving their opponents even a single opportunity to score, they have truly established their dominance on the field. Notably, on the evening of March 16, 2024, the team’s hard work resulted in a definitive triumph over Minnesota (14-12).

Impressively Dominant Performances

Both the team and individual players shone bright during this event. Pitcher Alana Vawter (7-3) had a truly memorable game, where she delivered a complete-game shutout and struck out six. All the while, she allowed only four scattered hits, with not a single walk.

Meanwhile, Denver Bryant and Carlie Henderson each finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Bryant, in particular, led the team with two RBIs, greatly contributing to the Gamecocks’ commanding performance on the field.

Game’s Play-by-play

The Gamecocks took the lead straight from the get-go. The first inning began with a series of strategic plays that led the team ahead. Riley Blampied got the ball rolling with a walk. This was followed by a strategic single up the middle by Karley Shelton. Once Bryant executed a sacrifice bunt, Blampied managed to score on a groundout, which was brilliantly executed by Jen Cummings.

The second inning of the game saw Bryant expanding the lead of the Gamecocks. Carlie Henderson singled and Brooke Blankenship drew a walk, further challenging their opponents. As Carolina loaded the bases, Bryant delivered a single up the middle, effectively scoring Henderson and Blankenship.

The fifth inning marked the Gamecocks’ final scoring efforts. Aniyah Black gave a two-out single to right center, followed by a Henderson single on the right side. Marissa Gonzalez, acting as the pinch runner, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another.

Looking Ahead

The South Carolina Gamecocks aren’t resting on their laurels. As the Garnet & Black Invitational wraps up, the team is set to take on NC State at 3 p.m., followed by a match against Northwestern 30 minutes after the first game ends. As they prepare for their upcoming matches, the Gamecocks continue to showcase their exceptional sporting prowess, much to the delight of their followers and fans.
