Greenville County, S.C. has implemented a unique initiative to encourage high school students to pursue careers in education. The program, called the Future Teacher Academy (FTA), provides students with hands-on experiences that aim to nurture their passion for teaching. The initiative is particularly timely as many schools are currently facing a shortage of qualified teachers.
High school seniors, like Liz Alverson from Riverside High School, are benefiting from this program. Alverson, who initially considered a career in child psychology, has found her calling in teaching through the FTA. Another participant, Haasini Mavuri, is interested in becoming a pediatrician but recognizes the importance of understanding classroom dynamics and creating safe environments for children.
The Future Teacher Academy is designed to give students a comprehensive look into the teaching profession. The program includes hands-on practicums in local schools, opportunities to mentor with district officials, and collaborative projects with classmates. By participating, students can earn up to 12 hours of college credit and accumulate 120 hours of teaching experience. This experience is invaluable, as it allows them to explore whether teaching is the right fit before they commit to a college major.
The FTA is available to high school students within the Greenville County school district. The program is currently in session and runs throughout the academic year, culminating in a final assessment of the students’ experiences and skills.
According to Rachel Turner, the FTA specialist, there is a pressing need for teachers in the community. She emphasizes that “we want to grow our own” teachers, which is why the program has been established. Many students leave high school without any practical teaching experience, often realizing too late in their college careers that education isn’t the path for them. This program seeks to bridge that gap.
In addition to the FTA, students planning to attend Clemson University have the option to participate in the Expressway to Tiger Town program. This initiative guarantees automatic acceptance into the College of Education, allowing students to complete their bachelor’s degree in three years. Furthermore, they receive a guaranteed interview with the Greenville County Schools upon graduation, underscoring the district’s commitment to retaining local talent.
The Future Teacher Academy is not just about nurturing future educators but also about supporting students who may enter various child-focused professions. Haasini Mavuri summarizes this sentiment well, stating that the skills gained from the FTA will help her create a calming, safe environment for children in her future career. This innovative program at Riverside High School demonstrates an proactive approach to addressing teacher shortages while inspiring students to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
