Furman Women’s Basketball celebrates their impressive win against Western Carolina.
Furman University’s women’s basketball team showcased a stellar performance, defeating Western Carolina 82-73. Tate Walters led the charge with a career-high 30 points, supported by Sydney Ryan’s double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Paladins established dominance early, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the game despite a late push from Western Carolina. This victory marks Furman’s 15th consecutive win over Western Carolina and improves their season record to 11-7. Fans eagerly anticipate their next game against UNC Greensboro this Saturday.
In a thrilling matchup that had fans on the edge of their seats, Furman University delivered an impressive performance against Western Carolina on Thursday evening at Hayes Gymnasium, located on the picturesque campus of North Greenville University. The Paladins powered through to secure an 82-73 victory, marking a memorable evening for players and fans alike!
The spotlight shone brightly on Tate Walters, who showcased her skills by racking up a career-high of 30 points! Walters was sizzling from the field, shooting an impressive 10-of-17 overall and hitting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. As if that wasn’t enough, she also sunk six free throws during her stellar 35 minutes of play. But her contributions didn’t end there; Walters also achieved eight assists, eight rebounds, and three steals that helped propel the team to victory. Moreover, she reached another milestone by moving into third place on Furman’s all-time assists list with a total of 406 career assists.
While Walters put on a scoring clinic, she wasn’t alone in her efforts. Sydney Ryan delivered a solid performance with a double-double, notching 22 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, freshman sensation Raina McGowens13 points. Together, they made it a night to remember for the Paladins!
Furman wasted no time in establishing dominance, jumping out to an early lead with an electrifying 11-2 run just three minutes into the game. Ryan was quick to hit her first three-pointer, bringing the score to 14-2 in the first quarter. The Paladins ended the first quarter on a high note, leading 18-6 and proving they meant business.
As the game progressed, Furman maintained their momentum, holding a steady lead of 33-21 at the halftime mark. The excitement continued into the third quarter when Furman strung together back-to-back three-pointers, pushing their lead to a whopping 39-21. At one point, they held a massive lead of 23 points during the third quarter, thanks to Ryan’s impressive 13 points during that period alone.
Though Furman did not trail at any point in the game, Western Carolina did put up a fierce fight toward the end. With about 5 minutes remaining, Jada Burton made a bold push, narrowing the score to 66-57. But the Paladins quickly regrouped, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Western Carolina, while battling hard, faced challenges in their shooting game. The team only managed to hit 3-of-15 in the first quarter and struggled significantly with their three-point shots, missing the first 13 attempts. Chelsea Wooten led the team with 20 points, and Jada Burton contributed 17 points, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome Furman’s solid performance.
With this victory, Furman improved their season record to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference. The Paladins celebrated their incredible 15th consecutive win over Western Carolina, a testament to their ongoing dominance.
