Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld” is set to take the stage at Furman University, bringing a whimsical twist to the classic mythological tale. The operetta, known for scandalizing Parisian critics in 1858, has continued to captivate audiences with its witty humor and lively music for over 165 years.
Updated to the 1950s, the Furman University production of “Orpheus in the Underworld” will offer a fresh take on the comedic retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice’s story. While staying true to the mythological narrative, the operetta adds humorous elements like Orpheus being relieved to be rid of his wife and the gods of Olympus seeking excitement in their monotonous lives.
Director Grant Knox describes the upcoming performances as a “party on stage,” filled with zany antics, wacky humor, and plenty of dancing. The operetta’s famous can-can tune, the “Galop Infernal,” promises to bring a chaotic and celebratory atmosphere to the production, showcasing the talents of the Furman University students.
The cast, comprised of around 40 students, is set to deliver a dynamic and engaging performance under Knox’s direction. With a score filled with solos, duets, and ensemble numbers, “Orpheus in the Underworld” will offer a lively and entertaining experience for all attendees.
The performances of “Orpheus in the Underworld” will take place on April 13-14 at McAlister Auditorium on the Furman campus. Sung in English and with free admission, the operetta promises to be a delightful showcase of talent and creativity.
Join Furman University for a memorable evening filled with laughter and music as they bring “Orpheus in the Underworld” to life in a way that is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.
