Furman Professor Caterisano to be inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame
Greenville, SC
Earlier this year, Furman University’s very own Tony Caterisano received the prestigious honor of being named to the class of 2024 National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a professor of health sciences and a dedicated 40-year veteran of the university, Caterisano has left an indelible mark on the wrestling community.
Caterisano’s contributions to the sport of wrestling extend far beyond the classroom. He served as the head wrestling coach at Furman from 1984 to 1991, leading the team to great success during his tenure. Notably, under his guidance, Marty Fajerman ’91 was crowned the Southern Conference Champion, showcasing Caterisano’s exceptional coaching abilities.
Aside from his time at Furman, Caterisano also shared his expertise with various institutions in the wrestling world. He coached at Greenville County Schools, Christ Church Episcopal School, and Spartanburg Methodist College, influencing numerous young athletes along the way. His passion for the sport led him to serve as a South Carolina High School League wrestling official for more than a decade, further solidifying his commitment to wrestling.
Recognizing his significant contributions, Caterisano was honored with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award from the South Carolina chapter. This prestigious accolade is a testament to his dedication and impact on the wrestling community in the state.
Recognition at the 47th Honors Weekend
Caterisano’s remarkable legacy in wrestling will be officially celebrated during the 47th Honors Weekend, scheduled to take place on May 31 and June 1 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The event will serve as a fitting tribute to Caterisano’s outstanding career and lasting influence on the sport.
Join us in congratulating Tony Caterisano on this well-deserved honor as he takes his rightful place among the legends of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. His passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to wrestling have left an enduring impact that will continue to inspire generations of athletes to come.
