Who’s Behind This Return?
This new chapter for Freddy’s in Greenville is being spearheaded by some big names, including Denver Broncos offensive guard and Wichita native Ben Powers. He’s teaming up with local partners Brett Rickert and Brian Stevens from GVL Hospitality. Interestingly, all three of them have a long history together. They went to the same high school back in Kansas, and Stevens and Powers were even next-door neighbors!
Why Was Freddy’s Gone?
Now, you might be wondering, why did Freddy’s disappear from Greenville in the first place? There was a location on Woodruff Road that opened back in 2015, but it eventually closed its doors due to some setbacks. As Rickert explains, “Some of those stores that were there and closed weren’t run the greatest. So we’re here to change that.” Who wouldn’t want to see a fresh start for a great brand?
What’s the Plan?
With a strong development agreement in place with Freddy’s corporate that starts in 2026, the trio has ambitious plans. They’re looking to open 10 stores across the Greenville market by 2031! Talk about a tasty expansion! The aim is to stretch from Interstate 385 to hotspots like Woodruff Road, Pelham Road, Haywood Mall, and even cities like Duncan, Mauldin, Greer, Simpsonville, and WO Ezell Boulevard near Spartanburg.
How Did They Get Here?
For Rickert, the journey began years ago when he worked for Freddy’s corporate office before deciding to come to South Carolina to franchise the now-beloved brand. He says, “I was trying to find a kind of big small-town-feeling cities. We landed on Columbia first but always had interest in getting into Greenville.” And now it’s happening!

Currently, there’s just one Freddy’s location operating in the Upstate, found at 4845 Calhoun Memorial Highway in Easley.
