Family members marched through downtown Greenville on Tuesday, calling on the justice system to do more about the death of Cortland Whitaker. 28-year-old Whitaker passed away last October from suicide, just over a month after he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.
Whitaker’s family states that they believe his brain injury came from him being attacked by security guards outside the On The Roxx bar in downtown Greenville. The City of Greenville confirmed that a person was charged with Assault & Battery 3rd degree following the incident. However, Whitaker’s family is pushing for officials to upgrade the charges.
“He was a brother, he was a son, he was an uncle, he was a business owner right here on Main Street and he loved his community,” said Whitaker’s mother. “He loved his life and what happened to him is absolutely unacceptable.”
In response to the march, the City of Greenville released the following statement about the situation. “There are pending criminal charges related to the assault of Mr. Whitaker. To avoid any appearance or allegation of unfair pretrial publicity which could negatively impact the city’s ability to prosecute, we decline to comment.”
The family of Cortland Whitaker is seeking justice and answers as they continue to mourn his loss. The circumstances surrounding his death have left them with many questions and they are determined to get to the bottom of what happened.
Stay with us as we work to learn more details about this tragic case and the ongoing investigation. The family of Cortland Whitaker is hopeful that their pursuit of justice will lead to the truth about what really happened to him.
