F-16s Made in Greenville Arrive in Slovakia
Greenville, South Carolina made headlines as the first Greenville-produced F-16s landed in Slovakia on July 22, 2024. The aerospace company, Lockheed Martin, celebrated the arrival of its F-16 Block 70s in Slovakia, marking a milestone in European air defense.
Out of a total of 14 contracted F-16 Block 70s, Lockheed Martin has already manufactured five. The remaining nine aircraft are currently in production and are expected to be delivered by the end of 2025. These new F-16 Block 70 fighter jets are touted to equip the Slovak air force with enhanced capabilities to counter 21st-century security challenges.
New Era for European Air Defense
The arrival of these advanced F-16s signifies a strategic milestone for both Slovakia and NATO allies. The jets not only represent a stronger alliance between Slovakia, the United States, and NATO allies but also equip the Slovak Air Force with advanced capabilities to face 21st Century Security challenges.
The aircrafts, one a one-seater and the other a two-seater, were delivered to Slovakia back in February, but remained in the United States until members of the military completed training on operating and flying the high-tech fighters.
The F-16 Block 70 Features
Features of the F-16 Block 70 include the Northrop Grumman APG-83 AESA Radar, advanced avionics, and a prolonged structural service life of 12,000 hours. It also comes with an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto GCAS). As of now, the area around Greenville hosts 128 F-16 Block 70/72 fighters under production, out of which 12 have been delivered to international partners.
Lockheed Martin Greenville Site
The Lockheed Martin site, which became the global production headquarters for the F-16, was originally a sustainment center for aircraft maintenance and upgrades. The center currently employs about 1,000 workers and has a staggering $100 million economic impact on the area.
The Slovak Republic welcomed the aircraft with a delegate that included the president of Slovakia along with various ministers and business leaders. With this, Slovakia has become the latest nation to operate the F-16 – a benchmark NATO fighter. This signifies their bolstered defense capabilities and readiness for NATO operations.
