Greenville is buzzing with the news of an ambitious master plan that could transform the Greenline-Spartanburg neighborhood from a place of despair to a vibrant community. Just under a mile from the flourishing downtown, this charming area has suffered years of neglect. Narrow roads, overflowing creeks, and homes in disrepair are just a few of the challenges residents have faced. But with the help of a dedicated consultancy firm, Aracdis, change is on the way!
For too long, the folks living in Greenline-Spartanburg have had to navigate a community that feels more like a forgotten ghost town than a warm neighborhood. Many homes are falling apart or have already been torn down, leaving large, empty spaces. Residents have even had to work together to place large boulders across the creek to cross from one side to the other. To add insult to injury, the invasive kudzu has taken over parts of the landscape, making conditions even worse.
The plight of the neighborhood resonated with Aracdis, who conducted months of planning and community input to craft a thoughtful master plan. They recognized not only the poor infrastructure but also the rich stories and culture of the area that are at risk of being forgotten. “While years of neglect to the community’s infrastructure cannot be denied, it is not just the roads and creek banks that are in danger of completely vanishing,” the master plan emphasizes.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this project is the involvement of local residents, especially the youth. Their input led to creative ideas like movie nights under the stars, a big greenhouse, and even a multigenerational book club. This sense of community and participation is exactly what the area needs to breathe new life into its streets.
The draft plan was presented to the Greenville City Council on Monday and is set to go before the Planning Commission on December 5. With strong support from council members, the plan may come back for a vote on December 8. Fingers crossed!
The comprehensive plan looks to address everything from housing to infrastructure improvements. In total, 481 new housing units are proposed, adding to the existing 248 units. A remarkable 44% of these units would qualify as affordable housing, helping to preserve the neighborhood’s character while ensuring that current residents can continue to call it home.
Addressing the current road conditions is a top priority. The plan highlights the need for improvements to narrow, poorly maintained lanes plagued by speeding vehicles. One solution includes closing off a problematic road and adding a much-needed traffic signal at the main intersection of East North Street and Chestnut Street, making it a welcoming gateway to the community.
Another super exciting feature of the plan is the additional street lighting at pedestrian levels, illuminating the pathways and enhancing safety. The community will also have a spur connecting to the Swamp Rabbit Trail, allowing for easier access to nature and outdoor activities.
One of the standout ideas includes a charming Storyline Strollway, where swings will line a walkway, sharing the rich history and stories of the neighborhood. This creative concept stemmed from a local young girl, Sentarrah Mennazz, who expressed a wish for swings in her community. How delightful is that?
Importantly, the plan suggests that the neighborhood should maintain its identity by keeping the name Greenline-Spartanburg. The hope is to not just enhance the area physically but also to celebrate its vibrant culture and history. With the wheels of change finally turning, residents can look forward to a brighter, more connected community.
Stay tuned as this incredible transformation unfolds! With support and enthusiasm from residents, Greenline-Spartanburg is ready for its shining moment!
