Greenville, SC – The countdown is on for the upcoming school board elections set for November 5, 2024. One of the candidates making waves in the community is Missey Marsh, who is vying for the District 27 seat. With her extensive background in community organizing, Marsh believes she has the right mix of experience and passion to make a difference in the local education system.
For the past several years, Marsh has been deeply embedded in the educational landscape of Greenville County. As the founding president of the Fountain Inn High booster club, she successfully raised an impressive $653,000 for local schools. Her involvement doesn’t stop there; she has also been active in the Junior League and her children’s PTAs, showing her commitment to empowering families and advocating for better school environments.
The area she aims to represent includes parts of east Simpsonville and the eastern half of Fountain Inn, with significant schools like Monarch and Bells Crossing elementary, the Rudolph Gordon K-8, and Fountain Inn High. As the region grows, so do the challenges. Marsh has heard from local mayors and council members that communication with the school board has been lacking for nearly a decade.
Marsh is a keen listener and is committed to addressing the pressing issues facing her district. The rapid growth of the Golden Strip area is a primary concern among voters, as it can lead to overcrowded schools. “We should never have a three-year-old high school with portables out front,” she exclaimed. For her, it’s all about foresight—anticipating the needs of the community before they become a pressing issue.
Alongside growth, one of the top priorities for Marsh is the safety of students. In her view, a safe environment is crucial for children to thrive. She advocates for measures such as keeping school entrances locked and guarded, hiring more safety officers, and even installing metal detectors. “Children deserve to feel safe and supported in their schools,” she states firmly.
Marsh also wants to ensure that students are protected from inappropriate materials. Yet, she emphasizes that this needs to be done thoughtfully and without compromising educational integrity. Furthermore, she proposes that the board revisit what she refers to as “vague” or “unfunded” policies that fail to make a positive impact in classrooms.
Another crucial area on Marsh’s agenda is addressing the growing teacher shortages. “Teachers are exhausted and overwhelmed,” she points out. To create a sustainable environment for educators, higher pay is essential. Marsh also suggests establishing an off-campus board to facilitate open dialogue between teachers and school board members on various issues they face. She believes this could improve communication about unpaid responsibilities, leadership training, and even grant-related job security.
“Let’s create an environment where educators can thrive and, in turn, deliver a richer learning experience for all of our children,” Marsh passionately advocates.
With early voting already underway, the excitement is building around the upcoming election. Local residents are encouraged to participate and voice their opinions, shaping the future of education in Greenville County. Missey Marsh stands ready to listen, learn, and lead if given the opportunity to serve as their representative on the school board.
The community is buzzing, and everyone is eager to see how the election unfolds. Will Missey Marsh’s vision for education resonate with voters? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: the conversation has just begun.
