Global energy solutions leader, EnerSys, recently made the announcement of expanding its operations in Greenville County, South Carolina. The expansion plan is expected to stimulate the local economy through an impressive investment of $500 million and it is anticipated that 500 new jobs will be generated.
EnerSys, a key player in the design and manufacturing of batteries, chargers, and power systems, caters to industries covering a wide array of sectors such as telecommunications, broadband, data centers, industrial utilities, warehouse and logistics, aerospace, defense and transportation. In addition to these, EnerSys has recently proliferated into the production of Fast Charge and Storage systems which are developed to manage power storage and provide fast charging for electric vehicles. The company, in its centennial span, has managed to build a strong footprint across more than 100 countries serving over 10,000 customers.
The proposed plan will enlarge EnerSys’s production of lithium-ion batteries to facilitate the global clean energy transition. The expanded facility is expected to meet the specific manufacturing requirements of the customers emphasizing domestic-sourced batteries. The unfolding operation in Greenville joins the already existing 15 North American locations of the company, including a facility in Sumter.
EnerSys aspires to construct a substantial 500,000-square foot lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility on an approximately 140-acre site. The chosen site is in the Augusta Grove business park in Greenville. The manufacturing format of the company is projected to include varying form factors of lithium-ion cells intended for commercial, industrial, and defense applications. The plant’s production capacity is estimated to reach up to four-gigawatt hours (4GWh) per year. It is foreseen that by late 2027, the facility will be fully operational.
The large-scale operation is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities in the region. Interested individuals can find more information about job openings on the readySC’s recruitment website.
The project has garnered the support of the local government. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits concerning this project.
The arrival of EnerSys in Greenville and the proposed investment pave the way for a significant economic boom in the region. This bolsters the position of Greenville County as a hub for high-tech companies, attracting a greater talent pool and establishing a thriving community.
