Investigators: Man shot and killed by Easley Police officer was wielding an ax

Investigators say a man accused of shoplifting and threatening a store manager was wielding an ax before he was shot and killed by an Easley Police officer. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting and said Tuesday that the man, who has not been identified, was carrying an ax.

Details of the Incident

According to Easley Police Department Lt. Ashley Anderson, officers responded to 339 Rolling Hills Circle at about 10:50 a.m. Monday after receiving a call that a person caught stealing was threatening to physically harm a Tractor Supply store manager. The man had left the store by the time officers arrived. He was later located at his home in the 750 block of Rolling Hills Circle.

Once at home, the man retrieved a gas can and threatened to pour gasoline on a person’s vehicle. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man then charged at an officer with an ax, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

Officer Placed on Leave

The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The decision to use lethal force in such situations is a matter of intense scrutiny, and authorities are working to determine whether the officer’s actions were justified.

Community Response

The incident has sparked conversations in the Easley community about the use of force by law enforcement officers. While the details of the case are still being investigated, many residents are calling for transparency and accountability in how these situations are handled.

Previous Incidents

This is not the first time a shooting involving Easley Police has raised concerns. In 2019, the department faced criticism after an officer shot and injured a man during a domestic disturbance call. The outcome of that incident led to calls for better training and de-escalation techniques for local law enforcement.

Seeking Justice

As the investigation into the recent shooting continues, community members are demanding justice for the man who lost his life. Protests and vigils may be organized in the coming days to honor his memory and call for accountability from the authorities involved.

Conclusion

The shooting of a man wielding an ax by an Easley Police officer has raised questions about police response tactics and use of force. The investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will hopefully provide clarity on the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome, as the community seeks answers and accountability in the aftermath of this incident.
