Greenville: Duke’s mayo winner and nationally ranked breweries
Greenville has its winner for the Hot Tomato Summer competition, an annual event that gives local eateries a chance to showcase their creativity using Greenville-born Duke’s mayo and tomatoes. The champion this year was Clayton’s Deli in the Overbrook neighborhood of Greenville along East North Street. Owner Austin Bennett expressed his excitement, stating, “Obviously, we’ve been a huge fan of Duke’s mayonnaise for years. Like growing up, that’s all my dad would keep in the house. So it’s very exciting. I like making fun food that I want to make, and then seeing that people actually enjoy that also.”
The winning dish at Clayton’s Deli was the caprese melt, featuring Bacio mozzarella, roasted tomato relish made with tomatoes from Roundtop Farm in Liberty, basil, balsamic vinegar, and pesto aioli made with Duke’s mayonnaise. The second-place entry was the Southern Comfort Slice, a pizza made with Bacio mozzarella, Duke’s infused house-made pimento cheese, tomato sauce, and fried green tomatoes. Notably, the mozzarella used is made with buffalo milk. Runners-up in Greenville were Methodical Coffee and Curean.
Greenville ranks nationally for breweries
If you thought Greenville had exceptional beer and brewery options, you’re not alone. The city was recently ranked fifth by Tasting Table for beer lovers, surpassing cities like Pittsburgh, Denver, and Austin, Texas. Greenville was lauded for offering 2.47 breweries per 10,000 residents, along with hosting events like euphoria Greenville and the Greenville Craft Beer Festival that contribute to its vibrant beer scene.
New openings in Greenville
Meat and cheese purveyor Chadcuterie opened its brick-and-mortar shop at Grazeland Deli and Charcuterie Emporium in Nicholtown on July 26. Chadcuterie creator Chad Gangwer, known for his work with Southern Culture, LTO Burgers & Bites, and Habitap, offers charcuterie and custom boards at the new location.
The annual Tacos ’N Tequila Fiesta tickets are now on sale for the event happening at Judson Mill on Oct. 6. VIP tickets will include a Lunazul tequila tasting and swag bags. The event will take place in two sessions, with tickets available at tacotequilafiesta.com.
Recent openings in the Greenville area
Greer-born Flying Fox Coffee opened its first standalone location in the former Stomping Grounds storefront in Greer on Aug. 9. Nic & Norman’s also opened on Aug. 6 at 1 Augusta St. in downtown Greenville’s West End in the former Smoke on the Water location. A new Chipotle with a drive-thru lane for digitally ordered items opened on July 31 near the corner of Augusta Street and East Faris Road.
