Duke Energy Appoints Tim Pearson as South Carolina State President

Tim Pearson Named South Carolina State President for Duke Energy

Greenville, S.C. – Duke Energy has appointed Tim Pearson as the new state president for South Carolina, effective November 1. He will take over the role from Mike Callahan, who has been promoted to senior vice president and treasurer following the retirement of Karl Newlin.

Who is Tim Pearson?

Tim Pearson, 42, has been a part of the Duke Energy team since March 2023 when he joined full-time as vice president of government affairs. In his new role, he will oversee state and local government relations, regulatory initiatives, and community engagement throughout South Carolina. Lynn Good, the chair and CEO of Duke Energy, stated, “Tim has a unique set of skills that are critical to how we address challenges facing the utility industry in new ways in South Carolina.”

Background of Tim Pearson

A resident of Columbia, Pearson has extensive experience in government affairs and policy. He previously served in advisory roles for multiple South Carolina governors, including as chief of staff for Nikki Haley. His political experience also includes acting as general consultant for Henry McMaster during his campaign for governor in 2018 and 2022.

Achievements of Mike Callahan

Mike Callahan, who has led Duke Energy’s operations in South Carolina for the past five years, transitions back to the financial sector after overseeing key initiatives during challenging times, including the pandemic and severe storms. Julie Janson, executive vice president and CEO for Duke Energy Carolinas, highlighted Callahan’s contributions, saying, “I am proud of the many accomplishments Mike and his team have achieved in South Carolina.”

Future Leadership at Duke Energy

Following Pearson’s appointment, Tigerron “Tiger” Wells will take on the role of vice president of government affairs. Previously the state government affairs director, Wells is expected to manage Duke’s legislative strategy in South Carolina effectively. A South Carolina lawyer with a background in litigation and government affairs, he has been instrumental in the company’s lobbying efforts at the state level.

In addition to Wells, Heather Shirley Smith will continue as vice president of regulatory and policy, focusing on regulatory matters. Rick Jiran will maintain his position as vice president of government and community relations, emphasizing local government engagements and community connections.

Duke Energy’s Role in South Carolina

Duke Energy, a Fortune 150 company based in Charlotte, N.C., provides electricity to 8.4 million customers across several states, including South Carolina. The company is actively engaging in a clean energy transition, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions from electricity generation by 2050 and a focus on renewable energy sources.

With new leadership in place, Duke Energy intends to further its commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions for the citizens of South Carolina while navigating the complex landscape of energy regulations and policies.
