The extreme rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby has resulted in a supremely hazardous situation in the Northeast, where rising floodwaters have devastated communities. They have damaged homes, submerged roads, and necessitated emergency rescues. On Friday afternoon, rare flash flood emergencies were flagged for areas of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania, due to life-threats and catastrophic flooding coming to light.
Debby’s effect spans hundreds of miles of the eastern US, with a destructive mix of heavy rain, flooding, and tornado threats. This menace began affecting the Washington DC area on Friday morning with tornado and flood warnings and a flood emergency in South Carolina. Despite its tropical status diminishing, Debby remains a severe threat.
Since Monday, when Debby crashed Florida as a Category 1 storm, it has resulted in at least seven deaths in the Southeast. The heavy winds and downpours have left a path of destruction, flooding neighborhoods, demolishing homes, and trapping people in cars, homes, and boats. Moreover, this weekend’s sweltering heat across the region could hamper the recovery efforts.
Helicopters were deployed in Pennsylvania for multiple rescue missions. Hundreds of calls for help were received, including those from residents trapped by dangerous flooding in northern Pennsylvania’s Tioga County. As of Friday afternoon, there were still 80 to 90 people needing to be evacuated from their homes. The Pennsylvania National Guard has been called in, and helicopters and boats have been dispatched for assisting in flood response efforts.
Pennsylvania Gov, Josh Shapiro, announced a disaster proclamation for 21 counties on Friday. This response will facilitate more resources for responding to the severe storms and flooding wrought by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.
Debby’s torrential rainfall initiated life-threatening flooding situations at the Pennsylvania-New York border on Friday afternoon. Areas with mandatory evacuation orders comprise hundreds of homes. “Numerous areas are flooded with people trapped in homes,” said the National Weather Service. Flash flood emergencies were also issued in Westfield, a town in northern Pennsylvania, and North Carolina’s Greensboro area.
Washington DC faced several tornado warnings alongside flash flood warnings, demonstrating how quickly Debby’s threats could escalate. Torrential rain swiftly flooded the roads and disrupted public transportation in the area, causing delays in the district’s Metrorail service due to flooding.
A state of emergency was declared in Virginia’s Frederick County due to the flooding that required multiple water rescues. New York and New Jersey also took the same steps as Debby’s remnants continue to batter the region. New Jersey state of emergency was kicked off at 6 p.m., with details shared through an online post.
Over 7 million people are under some level of flood alert, stretching over 900 miles from South Carolina to Vermont. In Rockingham, North Carolina, a 78-year-old woman was found dead on Thursday after a tree fell on her trailer. Another man was found dead in North Carolina’s Wilson County after his home collapsed during a tornado spun out by Debby. At least five other storm-related deaths have been reported from Florida and Georgia.
Emergency responses under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission resulted in at least 130 rescues due to dangerous high water conditions. The Florida National Guard worked toward restorative actions, including power restoration, debris clearance, and wildlife rescue.
The torrential rains have left homes inundated and taken some residents by surprise. Emergency rescue crews in Pennsylvania had to evacuate residents by boat due to the dangerous flooding conditions. Meanwhile, residents in New York’s Steuben County are dealing with similar adversities.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, three children were rescued after they slipped into the rushing waters of a flooded creek. When the rescue personnel arrived, these children were found hanging on to a tree branch. This incident sheds light on the hazardous conditions caused by the flooding.
