A Clemson University student tragically passed away after a late-night car accident over the weekend. The student, identified as Caroline Deer, a 20-year-old junior genetics major from Mount Pleasant, was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Old Stone Church Road, south of the Clemson campus.
The incident occurred around 12:35 a.m. on April 13 when Deer’s vehicle struck a fence near the LaMaster Dairy Center. According to reports from the Pickens County Coroner’s Office, Deer was ejected from the car after it overturned off the road. It is believed that she may have overcorrected while driving towards campus. Unfortunately, Deer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene and transported Deer to Greenville Memorial Hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries the following day, on April 14. Another passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
Caroline Deer was a former student of Wando High School and had recently been working part-time as a pharmacy technician at a local CVS Pharmacy. In the fall of 2023, she was recognized for her academic achievements by being placed on Clemson’s dean’s list for maintaining a GPA above 3.5.
Shortly after the accident, Clemson University issued a campus safety alert advising students to avoid the area where the crash occurred. The Clemson City Police and Pickens County Coroner’s Office are currently conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
Car accidents like these serve as a somber reminder of the importance of wearing seatbelts and practicing safe driving habits at all times. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Caroline Deer during this difficult time.
