Greenville County Schools Shine in Statewide Academic Assessments

Greenville, South Carolina – Recent statewide test results reveal that Greenville County Schools (GCS) has outperformed the average scores across South Carolina in multiple academic areas. The district’s elementary and middle school students have shown impressive results in the SC READY assessments for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, while high school students also excelled in the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP).

In the latest assessments from the 2023-24 school year, GCS students scored higher than their peers statewide with significant margins. For example, in the ELA assessment, 61.7% of GCS third graders met or exceeded expectations compared to 53.8% statewide, marking an impressive 7.9% lead. The outcomes were similar across all grades, with GCS students consistently surpassing state averages.

Elementary and Middle School Achievements

When looking at math scores, GCS also stood out. In the third grade, 65.0% of students met or exceeded standards, compared to 54.6% statewide, reflecting a 10.4% advantage. Schools within the district demonstrated resilience, with two-thirds of elementary schools either maintaining or boosting their ELA and Math scores from the previous year. Middle schools showed a remarkable 81% of institutions increasing their scores.

High School Success

High school students in GCS also demonstrated notable achievements in the EOCEP. In Algebra I, the passage rate significantly jumped from 68.8% to 78.3% from the previous school year. Similarly, Biology I saw a rise in passage rates from 62.5% to 72.4%, indicating an overall improvement across various subjects.

Career Readiness

Moreover, GCS students excelled in the South Carolina Career Readiness Assessment, with 76% earning a credential, which is higher than the state average of 72.2%. This assessment evaluates crucial workforce skills and is taken primarily by 11th graders. The results show a positive trend in career readiness, with a large number of students demonstrating their preparedness for employment or further education.

Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster credited the hard work of students, teachers, and the district administration for these remarkable achievements. He emphasized the collective effort in supporting students academically and helping them prepare for future endeavors.
