Carole King, an extraordinary pop sensation and an essential pillar of pop music, is being portrayed on stage in Centre Stage’s production of ‘Beautiful’ in South Carolina. The theatre’s new star, Anna-Elyse Lewis, is excited to take on the role of the legendary singer-songwriter, an opportunity she has dreamt of since watching the Broadway production of ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ eleven years ago.
Lewis had always been a fan of Carole King’s music, which she deems as groundbreaking for its personal and emotional undertones. When asked about King, Lewis articulates her admiration, stating, “She really was a game-changer, ushering in that era of emotional singing and writing your own story.”
‘Beautiful’ traces King’s career from her early days as a part of a successful songwriting team with her husband, Gerry Goffin, to being one of the most prosperous solo acts in popular music history. The jukebox musical features King’s most famous songs, including “I Feel the Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and of course, “Beautiful.”
Lewis, who also serves as the marketing and communications director for Ten at the Top, is no stranger to theatre, with performances at Spartanburg Little Theatre and past roles at Centre Stage. This new role, however, is both demanding and rewarding. As stated by Lewis, “It’s definitely a tall order, the most challenging and easily the most rewarding show I’ve ever done.”
The musical sheds light on the story of Carole King’s resilience, her creativity, and relentless pursuit of her dreams despite being an industry notorious for its competition. Ahsha Daniels, the director of the Centre Stage production, spoke highly of the story, praising King’s character, “She is such a strong, resilient, creative woman. I can always get behind a woman fighting for her dream.”
Aside from featuring King’s life and music, the musical also includes performances mimicking other popular groups from her era, such as The Drifters, The Shirelles, and The Righteous Brothers. According to Lewis, the cast is dedicated and talented, promising an extraordinary performance for all spectators.
The Centre Stage production of ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ will run from July 18 to August 4. For those in the Greenville area interested in attending, tickets range between $30-$35. Further information for bookings can be found by contacting Centre Stage or visiting their official website.
