Columbia, SC: Bishop England Beats Riverside for SC High School Girls Lacrosse Championship Title

Bishop England Dominates Championship Game

In a highly anticipated showdown at Irmo High School, Bishop England showcased their dominance in the SCHSL Class AAAA state championship game by defeating Riverside with a commanding score of 22-2. The Lady Bishops, with a pristine season record of 19-0, secured their sixth state championship in the past seven years, solidifying their status as a powerhouse program in South Carolina girls lacrosse.

Running Clock and Unstoppable Offense

Such was the magnitude of Bishop England’s lead at halftime that a running clock was implemented throughout the second half at W.C. Hawkins Stadium. Riverside, coming off a state championship win in Class AAAAA in 2021 and boasting a 17-3 season record, struggled to contain Bishop England’s relentless offense, with the score quickly escalating in favor of the Lady Bishops.

Riverside Coach’s Perspective

Riverside’s head coach, Thomas Riley, acknowledged Bishop England’s prowess, stating, “Bishop England is a great team. I don’t think we were intimidated. We look forward to the next opportunity.” Despite the challenging matchup, Riverside players showed resilience on the field, with Bella Bright and Peyton Ebbets contributing goals for the Warriors amidst Bishop England’s offensive onslaught.

Defensive Efforts and Goalkeeping

Senior goalkeeper Mariana Lopez put up a valiant effort in the face of Bishop England’s barrage of shots, making numerous saves to thwart the opponent’s scoring attempts. Coach Riley commended Lopez’s performance, emphasizing her crucial role in Riverside’s defense throughout the game.

Looking Ahead

As Bishop England celebrates another championship victory, Riverside reflects on their season and growth as a team. Despite falling short in the championship game, Coach Riley and the Warriors remain determined and focused on future opportunities to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level in South Carolina girls lacrosse.
