Bicycle racing is making a comeback in downtown Greenville. The city will host the Greenville Cycling Classic by Prisma Health on April 25, featuring all of the major professional cycling teams, including the top tier men’s and women’s cyclists in the United States. The event was announced by three cycling legends and Greenville residents: Bobby Julich, George Hincapie, and Christian Vande Velde.
The Greenville Cycling Classic will kick off at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, starting from the start/finish line at ONE City Plaza, located at North Main and Coffee streets. The event will include a full schedule of both amateur and professional bike races for men and women. Additionally, a special ride with the three Tour de France legends will be open to the public, free of charge, for riders ages 12 and older.
“We’re thrilled to bring high-speed criterium racing back to Greenville,” said George Hincapie, a 17-time Tour de France veteran. “This event will be a fantastic spring highlight for the entire community to enjoy, and I can’t wait to watch the action.”
A criterium race is a fast-paced style of road cycling held on a short, closed circuit course. The Greenville event will take place on an exciting one-kilometer course, featuring tight corners and fast straightaways as it winds its way through the heart of downtown Greenville.
Professional cycling has a long history in the city, with the first official professional cycling race, the Michelin Cycling Classic, being held downtown in 1986. Over the years, Greenville has been chosen as a host for high-profile events like the Tour DuPont, Olympic Torch Relay, and multiple US Professional National Championship events.
On April 25, road closures will be in place from Noon to 11 p.m. to accommodate the event. The following streets will be affected:
