Back to School: What Greenville Parents Need to Know

Back to School: What Greenville Parents Need to Know

Greenville County is gearing up for the new school year, with students heading back to class soon. While students in some nearby counties, like Anderson, have already returned, Greenville County Schools will start back on August 8. In Spartanburg, students will return on August 12. As the first day approaches, here are five key things every parent should keep in mind to ensure a smooth start.

1. School Hours

Understanding the school schedule is critical. The school day for different grades in Greenville County runs as follows:

  • 4K Full-Day: 7:45 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.
  • Elementary Schools: 7:45 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.
  • Middle Schools: 8:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
  • High Schools: 8:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

2. Free Meals for Students

Good news for families: All students in Greenville County schools are eligible for free breakfast this year. Additionally, 82 schools will offer free lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. Only a few schools require payment or individual applications for free or reduced lunch.

3. Important Dates to Remember

Keep an eye on these important dates:

  • Labor Day: September 2
  • Election Day: November 5
  • Thanksgiving Break: November 27-29
  • Winter Break: December 23 – January 3
  • First Report Cards: October 21
  • Spring Break: March 17-21

4. School Supplies

You can find a list of school supplies on the Greenville County Schools website. Each school may also provide specific requirements. Several community events will offer discounted or free supplies, so be sure to check local resources.

5. Getting Involved

Parents are encouraged to join the Parent Teacher Association or attend school board meetings. The Greenville District PTA meets every second Thursday at noon, while school board meetings occur on the fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m. These are great opportunities to contribute to the school community and stay informed.

As the countdown to the new school year begins, being prepared can help students and parents transition smoothly into a successful year ahead.
