About the Artist and His Work

Rial Rye, known for his innovative use of materials, creates his artworks by upcycling materials such as old cabinets, tabletops, and toys, supplemented by resin and cement. His pieces often incorporate unconventional materials in a way that challenges the viewer’s perspective on conventional artwork.

In an interview, Rye explained the concept of “Artifacts of What?” exhibition saying, “Being biracial and queer, there’s not many artifacts or related historical materials I can relate to. I always say that my work is a study in misfitting and trying to figure out where I belong. Growing up I never saw someone who looked like me and in my art practice, it has become very clear that there is no visual language for biracialism. So it is my desire to, if not create a visual language, draw attention to that.” His works brilliantly encapsulate this sentiment, bridging the gap between contemporary art and personal identity.
