GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Alabama’s women’s basketball team faced a tough loss on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Crimson Tide fell to the Tennessee Lady Vols with a final score of 83-61.
The Crimson Tide, seeded No. 4, was led by Sarah Ashlee Barker, who put up 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists during the game. Loyal McQueen added 15 points and four rebounds, while Karly Weathers contributed nine points, five rebounds, and four steals on defense.
On the other side, Jewel Spear led the Lady Vols, scoring an impressive 24 points and making all six of her three-point attempts. Rickea Jackson also made a significant impact with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Head Coach Kristy Curry acknowledged Tennessee’s strong performance, especially highlighting the standout play of Rickea Jackson and Jewel Spear. She praised the Lady Vols’ effectiveness on both ends of the court and expressed pride in her team’s efforts throughout the regular season. Despite the loss, Coach Curry looked ahead to Selection Sunday with optimism, emphasizing her pride in the team’s accomplishments.
Alabama managed to score 16 points off Tennessee’s turnovers and received 20 points from their bench players, with Karly Weathers leading with nine points. However, the team struggled with shooting consistency, finishing at 39.7 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from beyond the arc.
On the flip side, Tennessee shot an impressive 50.8 percent from the field, with Spear’s sharpshooting from long range contributing significantly to their victory.
With the SEC Tournament behind them, the University of Alabama women’s basketball team now awaits the upcoming Selection Sunday on March 17. The team will learn their postseason fate during the selection show airing on ESPN at 7 p.m. CT.
