Hey there, Greenville! If you’ve been looking for good news, you’re in the right place because we have something fantastic to share that’s just around the corner for our senior community. On November 21, 2024, a special groundbreaking event marked a significant step forward in creating more affordable housing options specifically tailored for seniors in our vibrant city.
The new apartment community, called Southpointe Senior Residences, will feature a total of 90 modern and affordable units, including both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. These cozy living spaces will be situated conveniently just off the bustling Woodruff Road corridor, making it a prime location for seniors seeking both comfort and accessibility.
This project isn’t just any typical housing development; it’s designed exclusively for our low- to moderate-income seniors aged 55 and above. That’s right! If you’re over 55, this could be a perfect opportunity to find a lovely new home.
It’s wonderful to see collaboration in action! The Greenville Housing Fund and Lowcountry Housing Communities have teamed up for this project, along with some key partners like the Greenville County Redevelopment Authority and the Greenville Housing Authority. As Bryan Brown, the president and CEO of the Greenville Housing Fund, expressed, “We are so grateful for our partnerships… which have made this affordable housing development for our lowest-income seniors a reality.”
The developers behind this project, Lowcountry Housing Communities, bring more than 20 years of experience in creating affordable senior-living spaces across South Carolina and Georgia. As Brown stated, support from SC Housing has been essential through their 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, helping to provide crucial financing that allows this project to flourish. Brown added, “We are incredibly thankful for the tax credit financing and for all the efforts SC Housing is making to increase affordable housing opportunities in the rapidly growing Upstate.”
Now, let’s talk about what these new apartments will offer! The three-story building will feature a mix of one-bedroom/one-bath and two-bedroom/two-bath units designed with the utmost comfort and connection in mind. Imagine living in a vibrant community where you can interact with your neighbors, attend activities in a flexible and programmed community room, or even get fit in an on-site exercise facility.
Additionally, residents will have access to a business center equipped with computers—perfect for seniors looking to stay connected or learn new tech skills! Off-street parking will also be available, and the location is a stone’s throw away from various essential services, shopping, and even a Greenlink Transit connection for those who may not have a car.
For those eager to get their keys, preleasing is expected to kick off in December 2025, so mark your calendars! Southpointe Senior Residences is set to become a safe haven for seniors in our community, fostering a friendly and engaging atmosphere.
In just about six years, the Greenville Housing Fund has done incredible work, investing over $19 million and successfully creating or preserving more than 1,550 housing units in Greenville County. And now, with the addition of Southpointe Senior Residences, they are once again proving their commitment to making Greenville a better place for seniors.
So, here’s to more affordable housing options and a wonderful future for the senior citizens of Greenville! Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to welcome a bustling new community.
