Exciting New Affordable Housing Project for Seniors in Greenville!
Hey there, Greenville! Big news is in the air, and for a fantastic reason. The heart of our community is about to welcome Southernside Senior I, a fresh development dedicated to providing affordable living for our senior citizens. It looks like nearly 100 new apartment units are on the way, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!
A Step Closer to Construction
Just recently, on November 7, the city Planning Commission gave the green light for this project, approving some minor conditions. These apartments are set to be built off West Washington Street, just a hop, skip, and jump away from the scenic Unity Park. Can you picture the sunsets from those apartments? Absolutely breathtaking!
The Southernside neighborhood is about to get even better with this development that’s taking root on 2.1 acres of land donated by the city to the Greenville Housing Fund. This nonprofit was set up specifically to tackle the growing need for affordable housing in our area. It’s encouraging to see our city and county working together for such a meaningful cause!
What It Will Offer
So, what exactly can we expect from the Southernside Senior I project? Well, it will feature 93 age-restricted units aimed at making life more comfortable and affordable for seniors. Renters will only need to fork over 30 percent of their monthly income to secure their homes — that’s the standard for affordable housing in our community.
According to recently released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, this means that individuals making up to $37,260 a year, or two-person households making up to $42,540 a year, will qualify. That’s a big sigh of relief for many seniors in our area, paving the way for a more dignified living environment.
Community Support and Progress
In a meeting with the City Council last October, Bryan Brown, CEO of the housing fund, expressed confidence that they expect to secure state affordable housing tax credits for this project. The scoring system put in place by SC Housing ranked the Southernside Senior I project highest in its category. That’s an incredible accomplishment, showing just how valuable this initiative is to our city!
And let’s not forget about the financing! The project has already secured funding through Huntington National Bank, which is a promising sign that things are moving forward at a good pace. We all know how important it is to have solid financial backing for community projects!
What’s Next?
The Southernside Senior I development is just the beginning! This project is part of a larger trend where our city is working on enhancing affordable housing options. In 2021, the city government donated all 5.7 acres specifically for new affordable housing near Unity Park, and this new project marks the first step of many more to come!
As we move towards the future, let’s keep our fingers crossed that construction gets started soon and that these affordable homes become a reality for our beloved seniors. After all, everyone deserves a warm, safe place to call home. So, hang tight, Greenville! Exciting times are coming, and we can’t wait to see how Southernside Senior I transforms our neighborhood!
