Greenville Comes Together to Support Recovery After Tropical Storm Helene
Greenville is lighting up with a spirit of community and compassion as local businesses rally to raise funds for those affected by the recent devastation caused by Tropical Storm Helene. Just under two weeks ago, the storm brought widespread destruction to the Carolinas, and now it’s time for the Upstate to give back.
Carolina Cares: A Fundraising Event at Papi’s Tacos
On October 10, from 6 to 9 p.m., Papi’s Tacos on Augusta Street will be hosting a remarkable event called Carolina Cares. It’s a beautiful chance for the community to come together, enjoy some good food, and contribute to much-needed recovery efforts. The menu for the night will be slightly smaller, but that’s just an excuse to enjoy their delicious tacos along with drink donations from Tito’s Vodka and Thomas Creek Brewery.
What’s even more heartwarming? All the proceeds from this event will go directly to local and North Carolina relief initiatives. While the entry is free, organizers are encouraging attendees to donate monetary funds or bring needed items to lend a helping hand if they’re able. It’s a great way to socialize while making a real difference.
Aiming High with Lofty Goals
Local entrepreneur Tabitha Skipper, from Kelley Collective PR, has a big vision for this event. The goal is to raise an impressive $25,000, which will be distributed among three different philanthropic efforts to help those impacted by the storm.
“We’ve already raised $4,000 and we haven’t even posted a link to donate!” Skipper shared enthusiastically. The funds raised at Carolina Cares will go toward specific organizations that have their fingers on the pulse of what the community needs most.
Strategically Supporting the Community
The three organizations chosen for support are doing amazing work on the ground. First up, in Hendersonville, an event will be organized in partnership with St. Gerard House and the Hendersonville mayor’s office to feed about 2,000 people. Furthermore, Papi’s Tacos plans to collaborate with The Hispanic Alliance to serve food in Berea, where food insecurity is a significant issue.
Additionally, Nothing But Jesus Street Ministries will utilize the raised funds for their ongoing needs. Skipper noted, “It’s important to be strategic and know where the need really is. If we’re not getting the right supplies to the right people, we’re not really helping at all.” This careful approach is sure to maximize the impact of their efforts.
Community Support and Participation
Not only is Papi’s taking charge, but several local businesses are stepping up to lend a helping hand. Among them are Pangaea Brewing Company, Larkins, Augusta Twenty, and Modal Hostel and Coffee Bar. Many have contributed through gift cards for a drawing, product donations, and volunteers, making for a wonderful collaborative effort.
The inspiration for the event’s pivot came quickly after the storm hit. Originally, Trueline had set up a festival event that included selling bricks, but upon seeing the needs created by Helene, they decided to shift gears. “We were like, ‘We definitely cannot be selling bricks anymore,’” Skipper recalled. “We saw a need, and that sparked a desire to bring more friends in the community together.”
