Greenville Gears Up for a Heartfelt Return of “Next to Normal”

Greenville, it’s time to mark your calendars! One of the most moving and thought-provoking musicals, “Next to Normal,” is making its return to the stage at Centre Stage from October 17th to 27th. This special production is particularly close to home for Laura Nicholas, the managing artistic director at Centre Stage, who fell in love with this groundbreaking show over a decade ago.

A Long-Awaited Dream

Back in the day, when Nicholas was the stage manager for the original production of “Next to Normal,” the profound narrative surrounding bipolar disorder and family dynamics struck a chord with her. After experiencing its powerful effect on audiences, she promised herself to bring it back to the Upstate community when the time was right. And now, that time has arrived!

“It’s such a beautiful and moving piece,” Nicholas shared enthusiastically. “It’s a story that’s worth telling again.” Not only is she producing the show, but she’s also taking on the dual role of director and choreographer, ensuring that this rendition remains as impactful as the original.

A Tale of Family and Illness

At its core, “Next to Normal” dives deep into the life of the Goodman family, particularly focusing on Diana Goodman, a suburban mother grappling with bipolar disorder. While the family seems “perfectly normal” on the surface with Dad’s steady job as an architect, Mom managing the household, and their witty teenage children, things are far from what they seem.

The musical is a six-person ensemble that provides an intimately crafted exploration of themes such as illness, grief, loss, and the complexities of family relationships. Nicholas emphasizes that the score is dynamic and captivating, which adds to the emotional depth of the storytelling. “Everyone sings the entire time,” she mentioned. “They’re backup vocals when they’re not singing a solo.” With Meghan Reimers serving as the music director, the audience can expect a remarkable musical experience.

A Celebration of Artistry

Since its Broadway debut in 2010, “Next to Normal” has solidified its reputation by winning three Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score. Furthermore, it made history as one of the few musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, sharing this prestigious honor with iconic shows such as “Hamilton” and “Rent.” The role of Diana Goodman is regarded as one of the most challenging and rewarding roles for an actress, and this time around, it will be portrayed by Erica Doran in her Centre Stage debut.

Important Notes for Theatergoers

While “Next to Normal” offers a compelling narrative, audience members should be aware that the musical includes mature themes and strong language, along with serious depictions of bipolar disorder, depression, and attempted suicide. Additionally, flashing lights will be part of the production, so it’s advised to consider these elements before attending.

Get Involved

To foster a deeper understanding of the themes explored in the musical, there will be a special post-show discussion led by Paul Hyde from the Greenville Journal after the performance on October 20th. It’s an opportunity to engage with the cast and delve further into the complexities presented throughout the show.
