Every year, this charming city honors the remarkable life and talent of the late Linda Rodney, famously known as Chocolate Thunder. After left us due to pancreatic cancer in 2014, Rodney’s influence continues to echo through the musical community, which is evident in the upcoming Linda Rodney Award ceremony scheduled for October 13.

The award ceremony will happen on the stunning Furman Jazz and Blues Stage located near the picturesque Falls Park. This is no ordinary musical ensemble, as it boasts a dynamic lineup of talented local musicians along with three formidable vocalists who are sure to set the stage ablaze.
Triple Threat Vocalists Take the Stage
The spotlight will shine on Linda Sullivan-Nelson, the niece of Linda Rodney, who brings a personal connection to the tribute. She will be joined by the incredibly popular local singer Jamie Wright, and the one-and-only Wanda Johnson, renowned as South Carolina’s “Queen of the Blues.” Each vocalist will take the stage to perform two unique songs that both honor Linda Rodney and pay homage to the rich blues tradition she cherished.

Wright shared a glimpse into the thought process behind the performance. “Over the last few years, we’ve usually picked songs that were on Chocolate Thunder’s last album,” she says. “But this year, we all ventured out and did our homework. We dug deep to find tracks that helped her get her start and showcased her journey in music.” This exploration of Rodney’s musical roots adds an authentic depth to the tribute, making it even more special.
Keeping the Dream Alive
Tez Sherard, who once played alongside Rodney, has also brought along guitarist Troy House, bassist De’Markus Crosby, and talented horn players Dave Kaiser and Mike Gibilisco to complete the band. “This is an up-and-coming group of musicians,” he points out. “I thought it would be exciting to share this style of music and introduce them to the history behind it.”

For Sherard, honoring Linda Rodney hits close to home. He recalls visiting her at the hospital shortly before she passed. “It was really emotional,” he reflects. “Even knowing that the end was near for her, she was still sharing visions of us working together. She had such positive energy.” With this heartwarming dedication, Sherard’s mission is clear: to keep the dream of Chocolate Thunder alive, enveloping the audience in a sound that is sure to resonate with passion and soul.
