Greenville County Schools Shine in Statewide Exams

Greenville, SC – In a remarkable display of academic excellence, Greenville County Schools (GCS) have outperformed the state in several recent assessments, showing significant achievements in elementary and secondary education.

SC READY Assessments

According to the latest data, GCS elementary and middle school students exceeded state averages in the SC READY assessments for both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. The results for the 2023-24 school year reveal that GCS students demonstrated impressive performance across all grade levels.

In elementary schools, GCS students surpassed the state in ELA and math, with about two-thirds of the district’s schools either maintaining or increasing their scores from the previous year. Specifically, GCS excelled with 61.7% of third graders meeting or exceeding standards in ELA, compared to the state average of 53.8%. In math, GCS third graders achieved a success rate of 65.0%, significantly higher than the state’s 54.6%.

Middle School Success

Middle school students also showed outstanding results, with GCS outperforming the state in every grade for ELA and math. For example, 81% of GCS middle schools maintained or raised their scores from the prior year, achieving a 55.7% success rate for seventh graders in ELA, compared to the state rate of 50.3%.

End-of-Course Exams

At the high school level, students in GCS exhibited strong performance on the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP), surpassing state averages in all subject areas. In Algebra 1, the district-wide passage rate jumped from 68.8% to 78.3%, marking a significant improvement. Additionally, GCS students scored 87.6% in English II and 72.4% in Biology I, exceeding state averages by 1.8% and 9.5%, respectively.

Career Readiness

The achievements continued with the South Carolina Career Ready Assessment, where 76% of GCS students earned a credential, outperforming the state rate of 72.2%. This assessment, taken in the 11th grade, measures essential workforce skills including math, reading, and soft skills.

Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster acknowledged the hard work of students and faculty, emphasizing that these results reflect a dedicated commitment to academic success. “Together, we will keep striving for growth in every part of learning,” Royster stated in a release.
