Greenville Students Start School Amid Bomb Threat Incident

Greenville – On the first day of school, August 8, 2024, Wade Hampton High School was the center of attention after a bomb threat led to the arrest of a 15-year-old student. This unusual event occurred just as hundreds of students were arriving for their first classes of the year.

According to reports, law enforcement began investigating two separate bomb threats made against the school on August 5 and August 7. The investigation concluded with the arrest of a female student early in the morning on August 8. She was taken into custody at around 12:53 a.m. and will be held in juvenile detention in Columbia. Due to her age, authorities have not released her name.

Greenville County Sheriff’s spokesman Ryan Flood confirmed that law enforcement officials conducted thorough searches of the school premises after the threats were reported. Fortunately, no dangerous items were found, and students were notified of the situation through messages sent by the school principal.

In a recorded message sent to parents at 8 a.m. on the same day, Principal Carlos Grant reassured families that the school was safe and that classes would proceed as scheduled. He praised the quick actions of law enforcement and mentioned that the student would face expulsion.

To enhance security, the school implemented a portable weapons detection system called EVOLV and increased police presence on campus. Flood pointed out that while threats like this occasionally happen around the start of the school year, there are serious consequences for those who make them. “It’s just your typical shenanigans that had no validity,” he stated, stressing the importance of treating such threats meticulously.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges schools face with safety and the consequences of making threats. For now, the students at Wade Hampton High School continue their academic year with heightened awareness and security measures in place.
