Man Accused of Killing State Trooper is Person of Interest in EMT’s Murder
In a tragic twist of events, Jaremy Smith, a South Carolina resident, is facing serious charges in multiple states. Smith is accused of killing a New Mexico State Police Officer, Justin Hare, and is now also a person of interest in the murder of a South Carolina paramedic, Phonesia Machado-Fore.
The Murder of Officer Justin Hare
Officer Justin Hane was doing his duty early Friday morning when he was called to assist a motorist with a flat tire. Tragically, the motorist reportedly turned out to be Jaremy Alexander Smith, who allegedly shot and killed Officer Hare before fleeing the scene, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
New Mexico State Police Chief, Troy Weisler, said in an emotional press conference, “Officer Hare died serving his state and his community. On a cold, dark and windy morning, he offered help to a person he thought was in need. That person killed him in cold blood.”
Connection to Phonesia Machado-Fore’s Death
The shocking crime took an even darker turn when it was discovered that Smith had been driving a white BMW, which belonged to paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore. Machado-Fore was found dead in South Carolina on Friday evening, sparking a serious investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
While Smith has not yet been formally charged in Machado-Fore’s death, he is considered a person of interest. Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace said of Machado-Fore’s death, “Her death is senseless. Our community has suffered a tremendous loss. My team and I will not stop until we bring the person or persons responsible for her death to justice.”
Smith’s Arrest
After a two-day manhunt, law enforcement authorities were able to apprehend Smith in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday. Smith was shot in the foot by a sheriff’s deputy during the arrest, according to the Bernalillo County authorities.
Charges Against Smith
While it is not clear if formal charges have been laid in relation to Officer Hare’s murder, a warrant for Smith’s arrest had already been issued on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and armed robbery. As for his involvement in Machado-Fore’s death, Smith will remain in New Mexico on a murder warrant, as investigations continue in South Carolina.
