Windy City Burgers and Rapid Fire Pizza Rise from ‘C’ to ‘A’ Grades!

Greenville, SC – It’s a happy turnaround for two beloved eateries in our community as Windy City Burgers and Rapid Fire Pizza bounce back from their initial health inspection grades of “C” to a shiny “A” after making some crucial improvements. Back in December, both establishments faced some hefty health violations during inspections carried out by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) on December 3 and 4. But, oh boy, how the tides have turned!

Initial Inspection Findings: A Wakeup Call

During their initial inspections, Windy City Burgers, located at 12 E. Coffee St., received a score of just 77 out of 100, which highlighted no less than 12 out-of-compliance violations. The inspection report raised some eyebrows with concerns that definitely needed addressing. Some of the standout violations included:

  • Original shelving and wall coverings in the dishwashing area that were not meeting health standards.
  • Burgers being handled with bare hands, which is not only unsanitary but could lead to all kinds of problems.
  • A potato fry cutter that was found with an uncomfortable amount of food residue still clinging to it.
  • Containers of ready-to-eat foods that were lacking necessary labeling.
  • Cooling processes for French fries not being followed correctly.
  • Overall unsanitary conditions, including grease and grime lurking in the ovens.

That’s certainly not the type of news anyone wants to hear about their favorite burger joint! Meanwhile, just down the road, Rapid Fire Pizza, situated at 2023 Augusta St., was not faring much better. With a score of 73 out of 100, the pizza spot racked up an astonishing 16 out-of-compliance violations. Some of the more serious issues were:

  • Open employee beverages found carelessly placed in the prep area.
  • An unfortunate sighting of an employee not properly washing their hands.
  • The absence of proper hair restraints for the team members.
  • No soap in the kitchen or men’s restroom. Yikes!
  • Poor storage practices that led to a mess of soiled containers and greasy surfaces throughout.

Turning Things Around

Fast forward to December 13, and both restaurants showed they were serious about food safety and cleanliness during their follow-up inspections. They turned things around impressively and both received that coveted A grade! This renewal of standards is a breath of fresh air for loyal customers and a great way to reassure everyone that they’re back in tip-top shape.

Windy City Burgers emphasized that they’ve got a solid plan to safeguard against future mishaps. After all, they had been maintaining A letter grades in all seven inspections since 2022. Likewise, Rapid Fire Pizza had indeed enjoyed A grades in their previous five inspections since 2021, making these recent blips a surprising twist in their otherwise stellar reputation.

What’s Next for Our Favorite Eating Spots?

In total, the SCDA conducts over 2,500 inspections each year in Greenville County, ensuring restaurants adhere to health regulations and tackling the highest priority violations that could lead to foodborne illnesses. With grades dipping below 78, eateries find themselves in a bit of hot water, needing to prioritize compliance within just ten days to avoid further consequences.

As we wrap up this story, it’s worth recognizing the dedication shown by Windy City Burgers and Rapid Fire Pizza in bouncing back. Their commitment to *cleanliness, safety,* and the well-being of their guests ensures that we can continue enjoying those delicious meals with peace of mind!
