Greenville Welcomes a New Gem: Augusta Street Market
Greenville is buzzing with excitement as the Augusta Street Market officially opened its doors at 3017 Augusta St.. This Italian-inspired deli and neighborhood market has quickly transformed into a beloved lunch hotspot, all within just three weeks of opening!
On a sunny Friday afternoon, it was clear that locals had discovered this vibrant gem. The market was bustling with hungry customers around 1 p.m., and it felt as though everyone was on a first-name basis with co-owner Shane Taylor. If he didn’t already know them, his natural warmth and friendliness made it feel like they were long-lost friends catching up. Meanwhile, co-owner Nick Petracca was busy working his magic in the kitchen, whipping up delicious items that keep diners coming back for more.
A Bit of New York, A Dash of Southern Charm
Shane and Nick met last year and gradually pieced together a delightful concept that marries New York deli vibes with Southern hospitality. The result is a menu that boasts flavorful sandwiches, hearty salads, and a delightful selection of other goodies. Customers will find everything from coffee and breakfast sandwiches to a range of artisan dry goods, oils, vinegars, local dairy, and craft beers and wines.
The market’s location is prime, situated on Augusta Road, right next to The Dive on Augusta and across from The 05. The space is bright, welcoming, and expertly designed to handle busy lunch rushes. Diners order at one counter and pay at another, and navigating the lineup, especially with so many tempting options, is an adventure in itself!
Decisions, Decisions!
With such an array of choices, picking what to eat isn’t easy. The menu features an impressive 15 sandwiches, four salads, and two soups, plus a deli case brimming with pasta, chicken, and bean salads, and creative veggie dishes. After much deliberation, I opted for the popular Grove sandwich for $16, alongside a salad trio for $16. Both choices were packed with flavor and creativity.
The Grove sandwich featured vibrant pesto, marinated roasted tomatoes, crunchy parmesan crisps, all layered between thick, hearty wheat bread made from scratch by head baker Jonathan Allen. There are also some signature items like the Mulberry sandwich (their twist on a chicken cutlet hero), and the Arthur, which includes freshly made meatballs. One of the cutest tributes on the menu is the Hey Buddy, a beef hot dog topped with sauerkraut or Coney chili, honoring Nick Theodore, the former S.C. lieutenant governor and Taylor’s father-in-law.
Fresh and Flavorful Options
The salad trio was equally delightful, featuring Sicilian cauliflower, a zesty shrimp salad with perfectly poached shrimp, and an eggplant agrodolce that made my taste buds dance with joy. Other options that caught my eye included soy and peanut broccolini, Yia Yia’s Greek green beans, sweet and sour Brussels sprouts, and bacon potato salad. Yum!
With every bite, it was evident that the menu was crafted with care. Under the guidance of the talented executive chef Joshua Griffin, everything from the pesto to marinades and sauces are made in-house. There’s something for everyone, including vegetarian options, but vegans might find their choices a bit limited since some ingredients contain fish sauce.
