Exciting Upgrades Coming to Greenville’s Nicholtown Community Center

Greenville is buzzing with anticipation as plans for the long-awaited renovations of the Nicholtown Community Center are officially underway! Set to kick off in the spring of 2025, these upgrades are aimed at transforming this beloved local hub into a state-of-the-art facility that truly meets the needs of the Nicholtown community.

Revitalizing a Community Gem

Located at 112 Rebecca St., the current community center spans 6,048 square feet and has seen minimal renovations since its construction back in 1977. After years of serving the community with little more than basic upkeep, it’s finally time for a change! The city plans to dive into extensive interior and exterior renovations that promise to elevate the center into a modern gathering place.

A Vision for the Future

Calvin Hailstock, the president of the Nicholtown Neighborhood Association, is certainly excited about what’s to come. He describes the project as a “revolutionary endeavor” that will accommodate the rapidly growing community. “The meeting room is going to be expanding, which is going to house double the amount of people,” Hailstock said. He’s especially looking forward to the integration of new technology, allowing local children to engage in meaningful ways that cater to their needs.

What’s in the Works?

So, what can locals expect with these renovations? Well, it turns out, quite a lot! The project will include a host of site improvements, such as:

  • A brand-new parking lot
  • Beautiful new landscaping
  • A multi-use field and walking track
  • Exciting new playground equipment
  • Renovated basketball courts
  • And so much more!

Sylvia Palmer, a dedicated resident and advocate for the Nicholtown neighborhood, shared how the city has collaborated closely with locals for nearly a year to develop these design plans. It’s clear that the community’s voices were heard loud and clear during this planning process.

Funding the Future

This ambitious $4.9 million redevelopment project will take about nine to twelve months to complete. Thankfully, funds are in place thanks to the city’s allocation and a generous $2.5 million state grant. The city has chosen Cely Construction as the firm responsible for design and construction after a thorough selection process, ensuring that the best team is on the job.

To kick things off, Cely Construction hosted a networking event on December 3rd, where they sought out qualified subcontractors. This included local, minority, and women-owned businesses, highlighting an effort to bring the community along for the ride.

What’s Next?

In the words of Rod Gray, the city’s purchasing administrator, “We anticipate that this work will become available in early to mid-2025.” It’s a promising outlook that has the community buzzing with excitement! As the renovations progress, it’ll be thrilling to watch the Nicholtown Community Center take shape into a vibrant, modern facility.

For those wanting to keep updated on the project, more details can be found on the city’s official website. It’s time for Greenville to celebrate—big changes are coming to the Nicholtown Community Center, and this is just the beginning!
