SPARTANBURG — A heartfelt chapter in the story of community service has come to a close as Dave Collins, a legendary volunteer with Mobile Meals, steps back after an incredible 42-year journey delivering meals to the homebound and frail residents of Spartanburg County. At the age of 82, Collins has made lasting connections throughout the community that will be hard to replace.
Originally hailing from Boston, Collins and his wife, Jean, moved to Spartanburg back in 1966, where they quickly found ways to get involved and give back. After raising a family, Collins decided to take action and began his volunteer work with Mobile Meals back in 1982. Little did he know that he would devote more than four decades to this noble cause.
A Heartfelt Routine
Delivering meals wasn’t just a task for Collins; it was a vital part of his life and a true ministry. He could often be found at each delivery, engaging in warm conversations and sharing stories with those on his route. “I will miss seeing all the people,” Collins shared emotionally. His genuine care extended so far that he would even assist a gentleman on his route by helping him manage his socks. “You really get to know the people. It is about taking care of people,” he explained.
In 2009, after stepping away from his professional path, Jean joined him, and together they found joy in bringing smiles to the faces of those they served. Collins recalls instances where, if they were short a meal, he wouldn’t think twice about buying one from a nearby restaurant so no one would go hungry. “You find out quick delivering meals you learn a lot about the neighborhood you are delivering to,” he said.

Over the years, Collins developed a map of his delivery route, marking approximately 250 people he served throughout his journey. He became an expert navigator of the local roads and neighborhoods, witnessing how the community evolved. As new homes sprouted up along his route, Collins took delight in recognizing familiar faces along with newer residents.
Those who experienced his warmth often became extended family. In fact, the Southern Living magazine even ranked Spartanburg among the fourth-friendliest towns in the South. Mayor Jerome Rice commended the community’s spirit, with Collins embodying the heart of that sentiment.
New Leadership at Mobile Meals
As Collins steps back from his scheduled routines, Mobile Meals has named Laura Boles as its new CEO. She took the reins on April 1 and is keen on expanding volunteer opportunities. With the organization founded in 1977, the need for delivery drivers remains pronounced, particularly for rural routes in Spartanburg County. She emphasizes that “our volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do,” underscoring the importance of ongoing community support.
Reflecting on his numerous years of service, Collins expressed gratitude for every moment spent with those he met through Mobile Meals. “It was interesting, all the people you meet. When you are asked to serve, you serve. They become family. I didn’t realize all the connections I made,” he remarked.

While health concerns forced Collins to start taking a step back, he hasn’t completely ruled out volunteering again in the future. “It will take time to adjust to this new routine,” he acknowledged, with nostalgia evident in his voice.
